Harmon MYERS Obituary

MYERS, Harmon Lewis Dr. age 87, beloved husband, father, brother, teacher and healer passed away Monday, April 4, 2016 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born October 17, 1928 in Dallas City, IL, Harmon's family moved to Tucson in 1935. After completing his education in Arizona schools, Harmon graduated from medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1954. He practiced in Tucson with a special emphasis on osteopathic manipulation for 41 years. During this time, Harmon was actively involved in local, regional, and national leadership in osteopathic medicine. In 2004, he received the A T Still Medallion of Honor from the American Academy of Osteopathy. In "retirement," he was a preceptor for the Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Arizona and authored two definitive texts on osteopathic techniques in 2006 and 2012. Dr. Myers was known for his wry sense of humor, healing hands, and love of teaching. Throughout his life, he volunteered his time and service to his church, to his community, and to people too numerous to count. It was a common sight to see him haul out his battered old treatment table when someone was in pain, to work one of his small miracles with those hands. Harmon was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Edith. Surviving are his second wife, Betty Zimmerman; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Gene Moffett; children, David, Mark (Tamra Whiteley), and Barbara Miller; grandchildren, Kristen Myers, Cassandra (Jason) Dombrose, Christopher (Regina) Myers, Lauren Myers, Thomas Myers, Dan (Staci) Miller and Jessica Miller; three great-grandchildren; a bonus family of Zimmerman children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a large, close extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, Park and 4th St, near the University of Arizona main gate. Free parking will be available in the U of A Tyndall Street garage, which has entrances off Euclid and Tyndall. Memorials may be made to: FUMC Pastor's Discretionary Fund 915 E 4th St, Tucson, 85719 or the Tucson Osteopathic Medical Foundation 3182 N Swan Road, Tucson, 85712. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

Harmon's passing will be a major loss to the community of Tucson, the state and the nation. His works in osteopathic education are used internationally as well as all of the osteopathic schools of medicine nationally and now internationally. It was an honor to be one of his students, friend and colleague and to assist him writing and teaching in the later years. His generosity, humanity and kindness always will be remembered.

Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Dr. Myers blessed me with his teaching through his words and his hands, countless hugs and many more smiles. As a resident at Tucson General Hospital, a TOMF Board member and a counterstrain student he has given me more than I can ever pay forward. May there be comfort in knowing how many lives have benefited from his care, teaching and love...

Harmon was my master teacher for strain counterstrain while I was a fellow in Tucson; my husband was so impressed with this modality, that he became the first (and maybe only) ophthalmologist Harmon trained! Countless patients in my and Bob's practice have benefited from this work. Harmon was a kind, generous, patient. caring man and a wonderful physician who manifested healing medicine in all who had the opportunity to work with him. We are honored to carry on to the best of our abilities, his work through the tools he taught us. Danna and Bob Park

Harmon was a great long time friend, teacher and mentor-doctor to me during the bleakest time in my life. He was always willing to talk and perform his magic. I will miss his wit, his counsel and will think of him often.

I am so saddened to hear of Harmon's passing. He was my teacher, my mentor and my friend and I will forever be grateful for his guidance, skill and kindness. I will especially miss our Counterstrain conversations.

I became a patient of Harmon in 1979 which evolved in to a dear friendship and colleagueship for over 35 years. If he saw me wince or grimace with a sign of discomfort he was always quick to have me lie on a table or the floor to then work his loving magic to release my tension and pain. Harmon was the model of compassion, dedication, and competence that exemplified how a physician should treat, heal, and inspire others. Blessings on your next great adventure, Harmon. I love you.

Harmon was such a modest healer. He changed my life with his care, instruction and wisdom during my residential fellowship. That allowed me to pay it forward to hundreds of patients and colleagues. There are no more sentences I can use right now. Only one word sticks in my mind when I think of Harmon: LOVE.

What an honor it was to serve with Harmon on the Board of Tucson General Hospital in the late seventies. A gentleman and a scholar are just part of my description of a lovely human being!
