Meta Moore Obituary
Meta Claudette Moore 5/3/1922 - 7/19/2010 After a brief illness, Meta (88) made a peaceful transition at St. Mary's Hospice in Tucson, Arizona. Weighing 3 1/2 pounds at birth she was nicknamed, "Little Bits." Meta attended college and thoroughly enjoyed a successful 32-year career as a sales associate in the fur and coat department of R. H. Macy's (34th Street and Herald Square, and Jamaica, Long Island). She lived life to the fullest in New York City, and Springfield Gardens, Queens. True to cultural influences, Meta regularly attended Broadway plays, as well as stage productions and movies at Radio City Music Hall. When ocean liners were in vogue, she traveled extensively to Europe and the Caribbean on board the S. S. United States and the S. S. America. She also loved to entertain, especially hosting an annual Memorial Day barbecue. Throughout her life, Meta maintained a strong faith in God and belonged to several Catholic parishes: Our Lady of Lourdes (NY), St. Catherine's of Sienna (NY) and St. Monica's (AZ). In 1984, she retired to Tucson with her husband Alexander of 46 years where the couple built their dream house. Meta, an avid reader, soon became a skilled organic gardener. Then a series of oil painting classes fostered her skill at creating beautiful desert landscapes dotted with blooming cactus, and she participated in many local art exhibits. Three years ago, she moved to The Manor at Midvale, an active retirement community. Meta was preceded in death by her husband; four siblings and parents. Following an intimate ceremony she was interned at South Lawn Cemetery. Surviving family members include daughters, Dr. Peggy A. Moore and Deborrah Wilkinson; granddaughter, Jonquille Damian; great-granddaughter, Zoe G. Damian; along with cousins and nieces, Ouida Emery, Freddie Clark, Janice Stevens, Kellan Thomas, Mary Henderson, Eddie Caldwell, Timothy Waugh, and Barbara Lightsey. Meta wanted to thank "residents at the Manor who were good to me," and special gratitude to the staff of St. Mary's Hospice. In celebration of her life, Adrienne A. Lewy, an original founding member of the University of Arizona's internationally acclaimed harp ensemble, HarpFusion, will perform an hour-long concert.
