Lester Irwin Nienhuis

NIENHUIS - Lester Irwin, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, was born on January 20, 1922, in Holland, MI. He is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Rayzor Nienhuis; brother, Vernon Dale Nienhuis of Orlando, FL; son, James Irwin Nienhuis of Houston, TX; daughters, Gay Nienhuis Greer (John) of Nashville, TN, and Lisa Nienhuis Allan (Jack) of Austin, TX; and 6 grandchildren (Lesley, Adam and Scott Greer and Clarke, Caroline and Louisa Allan). Dr. Nienhuis grew up in Holland, MI where he graduated from Hope College followed by medical school and general surgery internship and residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He served as a captain in the U. S. Medical Corps and was chief of surgery of a M.A.S.H. unit during the Korean war. In 1954 he moved to Tulsa to establish a medical practice and later became one of the founders of Surgical Associates. He was an expert in fluid and electrolytes and oversaw the first artificial kidney procedure in Tulsa. He is a past president of the Tulsa Surgical Society and Southern Hills Country Club. He was also a member of the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, the American College of Surgery, The Western Surgical Society and the Southwestern Surgical Congress. A memorial service will be held on February 9th at 3 p.m., in the Asbury Methodist Church, 6767 S. Mingo. In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries.
