Leo SLATTERY Obituary

Beloved Husband Father and Grandfather Leo Francis Slattery died peacefully Saturday, January 4, 2014 surrounded by his family. Leo was born in St. Paul, MN on Nov. 8, 1920 and lived the greater part of his life in St. Paul. He graduated from Cretin High School in 1938, was a veteran of WW II and received a degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Leo was one of the earliest members of Control Data Corp. and focused much of his work on designing memory capacity for mainframe computers. Leo earned several patents during his years at CDC. He had an insatiable appetite for learning, especially as it related to physics and mathematics. Always the best dressed gentleman with his white shirt and bow tie, in recent years, he could most likely be found enjoying a cup of coffee and his Wall Street Journal at a Barnes & Noble coffee shop. His quiet smile always conveyed an Irish twinkle. He was gentle, fun, smart and loving. He will be greatly missed. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Doyle Slattery, three brothers: Richard, Raymond and Fr. Paul Slattery and by his first wife, Elizabeth McCaughey Slattery. He is survived by his wife, Sarann Slattery, two children: Robert F. Slattery (Toni Morales) and Ann (Chris) Malecek and by his step children: James (Carrie) Hanton, Michael (Cleta) Hanton, Mary Hanton, Catherine (Joseph) Marx, and Margaret (Chris) Cunningham. Twenty-two grandchildren and three great grandsons mourn the loss of their grandfather and will forever delight in and celebrate their memories of him. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dorothy McCaughey and Sarah Davey along with many nieces and nephews and countless friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bryce A. Pierson, the staff at Westwood Ridges Memory Care in West St. Paul and the many friends who assisted with Leo's care. A Memorial Mass celebrating Leo's life will be held Thursday, January 9 at 3 PM at THE CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION, 51 W Seventh St., St.Paul; with a visitation one hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested in Leo's name to Cretin-Derham Hall, 550 S. Albert Street, St. Paul, MN 55116. Arr. O'HALLORAN AND MURPHY FUNERAL HOME 651-698-0796.
