Alice Calvert Obituary

Alice Ziegra Calvert, 94, of Alton passed away on December 24th, 2021. She passed peacefully in her sleep with family by her side and will be greatly missed. Born in Boston, MA on February 26, 1927, she was the daughter of Thomas M Stevenson, Jr. and Ruth Tisdale.

Alice was raised in Needham, MA and after high school graduated from Skidmore College in 1949 with a degree in nursing. She was working as a registered nurse when she met her beloved husband, Louis R. Ziegra Jr., MD. They moved to Alton, NH to raise their two children. During her life Alice enjoyed gardening, weaving, being with family, and serving her community in various capacities.

Alice returned to the workforce as a registered nurse with the VNA and held elective office in both town and state government. She served five terms (1989 to 1997) in the NH House of Representatives.

Alice was predeceased by her husband Louis and is survived by her brother Thomas M. "Bud" Stevenson III of Londonderry, VT, two sons, James Ziegra of Durham, Ames Ziegra, DVM of Exeter, their wives, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a nephew, nieces and many extended family. In her later life she married and was predeceased by Robert Calvert of Alton.

The Ziegra family are incredibly thankful to Jean, Susie, Lisa, Becky and Deb who cared so lovingly and unselfishly for Alice in the last months of her life.

Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wolfeboro are assisting the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to local food banks. A memorial service is being planned for later in the spring.

Jim and Ames ... I was saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. As a kid growing up next door on the Proctor farm, I loved talking to both Alice and your Dad, and remember fondly the time we spent together as kids. I miss seeing your cattle in the field as I pass by.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to Alice's family. I met Alice through our volunteering at the Alton Food Pantry. Lucky me, as I truly enjoyed our talks, laughter and listing to her life stories.
