Gregory Cabrera Obituary

Gregory Cabrera passed away the morning of September 19, 2012.

How do you write in brief about such an amazing and colorful life?

Greg "Cubby" was born and raised in Oxnard. He is the first of five children born Mother's Day May 8, 1960, to Gilbert and Rose Mary Cabrera. Greg was first and foremost a devoted family man. Though he was often on ...the road for work, he always took time to spend with his family.

Greg began his career in the Television Industry after completing his degree at Oxnard College Television program. He started as an intern at KTLA Channel 5 Los Angeles. Greg went on to work in the News Departments at KTLA and E! Entertainment Television. Greg then began his own production company, Cabrera Visual in 2002.

Greg was a successful businessman who saw the world with his camera in hand, always looking for the perfect location, light and atmosphere.

Greg was a sportsman to the core. He excelled in all sports, and was a dynamic player and coach. Greg actively encouraged sports activities of his children. He coached them in baseball, basketball and track. He was their #1 Fan! Greg was also an advocate and volunteer for the Special Olympics of San Gabriel Valley. Greg was proud of all the athletes and their many accomplishments.

Greg was the life of family gatherings and celebrations. Greg would man the grill, organize games and sports, and tell colorful stories. He was innovative and an entrepreneur. Greg was magnetic. Greg would draw in strangers, and make them friends. Greg's friends soon became family. Greg was a kind, loving and generous man.

Greg would give of himself without cause, prompt, or need for recognition. It was in this spirit that he inspired so many others to give.

Greg is survived by his wife of 15 years; Carolina, and two children: Quetzalli and Cameron, parents Gilbert and Rose Mary Cabrera; siblings: Cecilia (Kevin), Anna, Timothy (Kristina) and Angelique. Greg is also survived by his mother-in-law, Ofelia, four brothers-in-law Sergio (Elvia), Carlos, Francisco (Leti), and Hector (Bertha), his many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and countless friends.

Greg will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers donations in Greg's memory can be made to the Greg Cabrera memorial fund established for Greg's children, at Chase Bank, Account # 3017368845 or the Special Olympics of San Gabriel Valley or your favorite charity.

I've only just heard the news . Greg was a truely wonderful man. He looked after me as a stranger abroad and made my time in Los Angeles very memorable. I had the honour to meet up and work with him again on a few return visits and he always made it feel like coming home. He was a true professional and a true gentleman. The world is not the same without him in it.

My crew and I have been looking forward to having Greg be part of our team again, and just learned the terrible news. He was a true master at his craft... but more importantly, his warm, vibrant spirit was contagious, and brightened the most stressful day on assignment... His love of his family and passion for life were obvious to all of us. What a wonderful guy! Cheers to you, Greg - you're missed by us all.

The Broken Chain
Ron Tranmer - Author

We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

Rest in peace, my Brother, until we meet again.

I knew Greg due to my working in the International Student Office at OC before my retirement. Some of my students were in the television Program. I believe my son, Mike Daly, may have been in the TV Program with him also. Greg was always very kind and although his hair had gotten white (as mine has), when I saw his famous smile, I recognized him. May our Lord give you, his family, strength and may you feel our Lord's embrace around you as you go through this difficult time. God bless.

Aloha Cabrera Family: I was Greg's Professor of Television at Oxnard College. It was a great opportunity for me to meet Greg, to teach him, and to befriend him. He was like a Son to me. And I, to myself, said that he would do great things for himself and his family both in life and in his chosen profession that I am truly grateful to God I was allowed to contribute to. To his Mom and Dad, thank you for making such a wonderful human being, who I will hold in my heart forever. Rest well Greg and enjoy your place among God's other notables in his Kingdom. Aloha Nui Loa!

I remember Greg at Oxnard College. Such an outgoing and friendly person, not to mention as cute as could be. One could not help but like him - he was such a GOOD person! Nice to EVERYONE! I can clearly recall the special relationship he and Teena shared - something truly special. Although I have'nt seen Greg in many years, I know if I had run into him he would have been as warm and friendly as he always portrayed. A truly special man..... To Gregs's wife, and family.... I am so very sorry for you loss, but find comfort in knowing that Greg is now your guardian angel - always watching over you and protecting you. God bless...
