Absolutely one of the best teachers I had at Ventura High. So warm, so funny, so genuinely interested in his students. I think about him often and with great fondness.

My sincerest sympathy to entire family. I first met Joe when I joined St. Vincent de Paul at Sacred Heart many years ago. Joe was always very nice and friendly, a gentle man. God Bless you all.

I was blessed to have Mr. Ellis for a teacher at VHS. He was a patient and longsuffering man with a class whose members overthrew Ex King Ellis every Friday and carried on the business of our make-believe country. I so clearly remember his pronouncement every Thursday that there would be no party on Friday, but when the goodies inevitably showed up the next day, he would enjoy them too. To his family, I pray for your comfort in this loss and fond memories in the midst of your sorrow.

I have very fond memories of Joe and his dry humor, time spent with the Ellis clan while our parents played cards. Pat, Lisa, Kathy and Margaret, may you feel God's arms around you while you grieve the loss of a special man.

Joe and his wife Pat were wonderful friends to my parents for many years. What a joy it was for them to travel the globe together. He will be missed greatly. I suspect he and my Dad, who passed just a few weeks ago himself, are having a grand time together in the afterlife. Love and prayers to the entire family.

Mr. Ellis was one of the best teachers I ever had. His intelligence and sense of humor made his history class at VHS both intellectually stimulating and a lot of funan unusual combination. I owe him many, many thanks.

So sorry to hear that Mr. Ellis has passed away. I graduated from VHS in 1972 (can't remember what year I had him for history) but I do remember him as a kind and soft spoken man. He was a great teacher who inspired his students to do well. I would like to offer by sympathies to his family.

Joe Ellis was a wonderful Dad to his kids, and a great husband. A very kind and gentle man who loved life. I know this because growing up we lived on the same street. Margaret, and Family thank you for sharing your Dad, when mine travelled so much! Rest In Peace Mr. Ellis.

Mr. Ellis was my history teacher in 72 or 73. He knew how to make learning a personal responsibility (or privilege), and to make it an adventure. I learned so much from one of our primary assignments that required interviewing someone that experienced a historical event, and report the results. Also very much liked his wit and subtle facial expressions that showed he too could be humored by a class of high school students.

Mr. Ellis was my all-time favorite teacher at Ventura High School. I'll never forget how he pulled me aside one day after class and told me that my answers to his questions were very thought provoking, he challenged me to work hard in class, and inspired me to be a better student.
