Samuel Carter Obituary

Samuel Carter was born on May 2, 1917 in Ashdown, Arkansas. After serving in the U.S. Military he moved to California in 1938 and began construction work in San Francisco, California. He later met and married Susie J. Hardin and moved to Tulare, California in 1948. To this union they had one son Stan L. Carter. He departed this life to be with the Lord on June 9, 2009. He joined St. John Baptist Church in 1967 and was ordained to the office of Deacon in 1972. He had been an active member of St. John Baptist Church for the past 42 years. He faithfully attended services under the leadership of Reverend Robert Charles. After retiring after 24 years from Waterman's Industries in Exeter CA, his hobbies included construction and gardening. He dedicated himself to St. John Baptist Church volunteering his time for construction projects as well as helping neighbors and friends in the community. He enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Samuel, listening to gospel music and attending church services when his health allowed him to do so. One of the most inspiring things was when he reflected for a moment after the November Presidential election. He looked us all in the eye and told us how blessed he was that GOD allowed him to live long enough to see an African-American as President. It was a very touching moment of reflection, one in which we will cherish and never forget. He is survived by one son Stan Carter and his wife Tammy, a grandson Samuel James Carter, nephews Roy Ray, Henry Ray and Frank Madkins, nieces Wanda Ricks, Elandra Perry and her husband Kevin along with a host of other relatives. He was preceeded in passing by his wife Susie Carter his mother Marie Hall and sister Jackie Ricks. Visitation will be Thursday June 18th at Peers-Lorentzen Funeral Chapel from 12:00-8:00pm. Services will be held at 10:00am Friday June 19, 2009 at St. John Baptist Church 310 S. Blackstone, Tulare, CA. Burial will follow at the Tulare District Cemetery on Kern Avenue.

My childhood memories would not be the same without thoughts of Sam, Susie and Stan. For well over 50 years the Contreras has had the honor of knowing the Carters not as neighbors, but as family. Our love for Sam and Susie will never end and our family will always and forever include Stan, Tammy and Samuel. May God embrace our loving, kind and gentle Sam in His arms with Susie smiling at his side. With love and respect for all of you,

With time comes healing, the memories soon bring smiles and often laughter too. Know that God will provide the strength you need, family and friends will provide the hugs. Be encouraged and allow God to hold you during this next leg of the journey. Love you all! The Jefferson Family

Sam, Sue and Stan. They were the trio mentioned in our home all the time. Sam and Dad (Richard Gomez) worked together for many years, and became fast friends. What a wonderful, wonderful man! May his soul rest in peace.

Stan, Tammy and Samuel,

May God strengthen you through this time of sadness. Uncle Sam left his legacy to carry on.

Uncle Sam and aunt Susie were a blessing to us and to all who knew them. We will truly miss them and cherish the memories of their love and kindness.

We can be comforted that they are both in the presence of the Lord celebrating God's goodness.

We love you always,

Kevin, Elandra, Melissa, Nicci and Nicolas
