George Talbot Obituary

George Talbot

Bethel, VT — George Stanley "Stan" Talbot passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 23rd. He was surrounded by family. Stan was born on December 4, 1934, in Boston, MA, to George Newell and Dorothy (Nelson) Talbot. The family moved from Hingham, MA to South Pomfret, Vermont in the 1940's where they began dairy farming. Stan graduated from the Woodstock Country School and from the University of Vermont, where he studied agriculture. He was a member of the Peace Corps in Tunisia. He later worked toward a Masters in French at UVM. He taught French, English, and photography at Orford High School where he took students on trips to Montreal. He ran the yearbook club, and was known for photographing the high school sports games. Stan enjoyed attending the French Table at the senior center in Woodstock, Vermont.

Stan had many passions, including biking, French movies and novels. He maintained an impressive workshop and could make, weld, and repair just about anything, as he generously did for others so often.

Stan was an avid cyclist, often completing hundred-mile rides and cycling all over Vermont and New England. He loved skiing, photography, animals, languages, welding, woodworking, and nature. He enjoyed walks on Mount Tom with his beloved dog Molly and remained active into his 80's. Stan will always be remembered for his dry sense of humor, kindness, love of languages and the outdoors, and his ability to create, fabricate, or restore a variety of things.

Stan was predeceased by his brothers Mike and David, and by his sister Linda. He leaves his sisters Elsa of Bethel, VT, Sara of Framingham, MA, nieces Yarrow and Mika Fought, Isabel Miller, Jennifer Talbot, and nephews Dan Talbot and Tommy Miller. He was a wonderful teacher, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed. A memorial service is being planned for the spring. Online condolences may be made at www.dayfunerals.com. The Day Funeral Home in Randolph is assisting the family with arrangements.

Paul Miyares (Class of '83)

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of Stan Talbot. During my years at Orford HS he was my teacher for French, English and even study hall. I always enjoyed his classes. He was a dedicated educator to his students and an exceptional mentor/advisor for the French Club. I enjoyed several trips to Montreal.

Rest in peace Mr. Talbot.

I remember Mr T. for so many things, but two of the most precious were: 1) In 1979, he lead a group of us back from the annual French Club Montreal trip on bicycles. It was an amazing three days. Such adventure, laughs, and experiences I still talk about to this day. It was also on this trip that we got to see the 30-speed bike he often talked about. He would later honor me in my senior year book by writing how amazed he was that I was able to complete the whole trip and on a 5-speed. He knew how to make you feel good!
2. A friend and I cut class one day (can't remember if it was English or French as I had Mr T for both) to help Mr Thatcher line the baseball field for a game that day (I was the team's equipment manager so I guess that's why I thought it would be okay.) Well, of course I got detention. The friend and I had to spend an hour with Mr T after school in detention before the game. I'm not sure what detention was supposed to be like, but the three of us just told stories, joked and laugh and were disappointed that it had to end. My friend and I would comment for years as to how much fun we had that afternoon.
You were amazing Mr T.

Stan Talbot was an awesome French teacher and a very memorable person. When I was walking to school and he passed me in his car, he would give me a ride and talk to me about his experiences in the Peace Corps. I will never forget that his favorite country at the time was India because "it was so full of color." Well, may heaven be as colorful as India. Bon Voyage, Monsieur Talbot.

Elsa and Sara, I am very sorry for your loss. I always loved spending time with your fine family when we were all young, walking calves, swinging in the hay loft, sitting around the great big dining room table with your Mom´s beautiful blue and white dishes. And always with Stanley´s gentle and friendly presence, tall and strong. Big virtual hugs to you.

I remember biking with him and he generously shared his darkroom with me for several years.

My sincere sympathy to Mr. Talbot's family. He was a teacher when I was in Orford High School in the 1970's. I never had one of his classes, but I always remember his friendly, easy going personality.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Talbot's passing. He was a wonderful teacher to me and my brothers. He was a favorite teacher of my oldest brother (Ken Gendron Orford High School 1980) for years. Ken and Mr. Talbot had a wonderful friendship that went well beyond the classroom. They had so many shared interests of French, going to Montreal, photography and very actually very similar personalities!! My brother Ken passed away in 2012 so I am sure that he and Mr. Talbot will be reunited. Mr. Talbot, Ken and a handful of others rode their bicycles many times together. I think they even rode to Montreal together. My entire family sends our deepest condolences to Mr. Talbot's family. He was a wonderful teacher and a kind person. We are so thankful he was a part of our lives.
