Pamela Doenges Obituary

Pamela Doenges

Hanover, NH - Pamela Lee Doenges passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at Kendal at Hanover, NH, at the age of 97. She grew up in Old Greenwich, Connecticut to an American mother and a Canadian father. She went to boarding school in Toronto, college at McGill, and earned a Masters in Ancient Greek at Columbia.

Pam met her husband Norman Doenges in Athens, Greece where they studied Classics. They married in 1952 and moved to Hanover in 1955 where Norman taught at Dartmouth in the Classics Dept for more than 40 years; living in Rome, Italy with the family for two of those years. They were married for 66 years.

Pam loved flowers and was generous in sharing them. Before moving to Kendal, she had large gardens and donated flower arrangements to Howe Library and the cancer center for many years. At Kendal, she had a garden plot as well as a thriving garden outside her first-floor apartment. The peonies are still a highlight.

Starting at age 62, Pam indulged her love of adventure and went on trips to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Bali, India, South Africa, and Costa Rica as well as several trips to England and Italy. Norman came along to the places that had Roman ruins. One of her favorite trips was to the Chelsea Flower Show in London. She had a renowned sense of humor and was often found telling jokes and making friends on the bus.

Pam was artistic and creative at many crafts and was always learning something new. She made turned-wood lamps, threw pottery, sewed, knitted, spun and dyed yarn, and even made some furniture. She was an accomplished marbler, on both fabric and paper, and taught a class. We treasure her marbled silk scarves. Most cherished was the weekly spinners group with long-term friends. Once in memory care, she took up painting with acrylic and watercolors.

Pam is survived by her daughters Cynthia Walker (Galen Cawley), Stephanie Doenges and son Jonathan Doenges. She was "Grammy Pammy" to grandchildren Andrew Walker (Krystie), Timothy Walker (Jordan), and Rebecca Cawley. She is also survived by one of her four brothers, Dr. Frederick Wiegand (Helen). She has a large and loving family of Canadians and Americans who will miss her dearly. Pam's family is grateful for the care of the Kendal nursing team. Donations in her memory may be made to the Howe Library, Planned Parenthood, and the Hanover Garden Club.

I was a lucky recipient of perennials from Pam´s gardens on Rip Rd. She also brought beautiful bouquets to us at her dental office.
She was one of my favorite patients. Plant a beautiful garden in heaven Pam!
