Ann Wilkins

5/27/1939 - 1/1/2024

Ann Starr Basinger was born on May 27, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Mildred Mills Basinger and Colonel Charles Spurgeon Basinger. Her early years were spent with her mother, while her father was deployed during WWII. She grew up in St. Louis, MO, then moved during her junior year of high school to Short Hills, New Jersey. Ann maintained her midwestern values of strong community, friendliness, and concern for others. After graduating from Millburn High School, she attended the University of Missouri where she studied elementary education and was a proud sister of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She began her teaching career in Missouri before moving back to New Jersey to be near her family continuing to teach third grade, where she was reacquainted with high school classmate John Grant Wilkins. Ann and John married in 1963, and in 1968 moved to Lake Barcroft in Falls Church, Virginia, to a home they stayed in for over 50 years, cherishing 56 years of marriage until his death in 2020.

Ann was an accomplished tennis player, playing well into her seventies. She and John enjoyed traveling the world and especially loved spending time each year in Palm Desert, California. Ann delighted in keeping up with friends from all facets of her life and she was the center of several social circles including potluck, bridge, tennis, Bible study and Lake Barcroft women's and newcomers clubs.

Ann was a loyal friend, wonderful big sister, loving mother, fun grandmother (affectionately known as GG), and devoted wife to John. Ann was predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her daughter Amy (Adam) Kress of Arlington, Virginia; son James (Kim) of Falls Church, Virginia; five grandsons, Matthew, Peter, and John Kress, Berkeley and Quincy Wilkins; and one granddaughter, Paisley Wilkins; her brothers, James (Donna) Basinger and John Basinger and several nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a celebration of Ann's life on January 28 at 2:30 p.m. at the Chapel at Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association: www.alz.org
