BERNARD ZAGORIN "Bernie" (Age 94)
Of Arlington, Virginia passed away at his home on March 18, 2015 surrounded by his family. After service in the Army during World War II, Bernie graduated from the University of Chicago with an MA in economics. His long career with the Treasury Department and the United Nations was devoted to employing the resources of governments to develop the economies of poor countries. He served in the United Kingdom, India, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and other posts. He worked on the Marshall Plan in Europe, was the first United States representative to the Asian Development Bank, and was instrumental in the founding of the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden under the auspices of the United Nations. Bernie's personal generosity was consistent with his professional duties. He was a firm believer in the benefits of education and paid school and university fees for numerous boys and girls in developing countries. He was known for charm, wit, puns, love of music and swimming which he practiced most days until the age of 93. He is survived by sons, Gregory, Peter and Mark; daughter, Ellen; grandchildren, Karl, Deborah, Katharyn, Caroline, Sarah and Caroline Rose and great grandchildren, Jacob, Bruce, Jonathan, and Michael. Funeral Services are pending at Arlington National Cemetery. Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA is handling the arrangements.
