Carlise Davenport Obituary

DAVENPORT CARLISE JAMES DAVENPORT Life‘s Journey March 19, 1936 - March 8, 2008 Carlise James Davenport was born March 19, 1936, the fourth of five children to the late Samuel H. and Iva Elizabeth James in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Driven by her entrepreneurial spirit a home based school evolved to become her greater vision, Tots Nursery School which opened in 1959 and was renamed Tots Developmental School in 1977. “Mrs. Davenport” created a unique and structured learning environment for pre-school to 3rd grade children, an endeavor unprecedented for minority establishments in the community of Washington, DC. Her program perpetuated the energy of a unique consciousness of American educators driven to impress the importance of advanced education at an early age producing doctors, lawyers, architects engineers and many other professionals. On March 7, 2008, the day before she departed this life, “Mrs. Davenport” was at Tots “until the last child left for home”. Funeral Services will be held at Israel Baptist Church, 1251 Saratoga Ave., N.E., Washington, DC, Friday, March 14, viewing will be from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Memorial services and interment will be held at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Ahoskie NC, Saturday March 15 at 2 p.m. Services will be performed by Hertford County Undertakers (252) 358-3141. Memorial contributions may be made to Tots Developmental School, 1317 Shepherd St., NW, Washington, DC 20011. Guestbook and Memorial can be located at: www.legacy.com on March 14, 2008. Hi Mom<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
It's Mike. I can't believe 3 months have gone by already.  It feels like last weekend when we were gathered in Ahoskie.  Things are going ok.  We've had our ups and downs but we're working together for the most part and I think we're closer as a result.  Many people are still walking up to me and saying what a wonderful mom you must have been.  I just smile and say yea she was one of a kind, pissed off a few but touched many, many more hearts and lives with positive memories.
Pete Jarvis passed away this week.  It´s always shocking to here about someone our age passing away.  He was working out and had a heart attack.  I'm going to his viewing tomorrow morning.  Maybe he'll say hi to you for us. I was in the house last week.  We haven't moved much but some of the stuff we have individually collected as we have time and stop by.  I think I've gotten the most. As I was walking out of the back door to the back yard I heard something playing "You light up my life".  I used to think it was such a corny song but grew to like it by associating it to you knowing that it was a favorite of yours. One you could sing with the children and they could sing to their parents.  So much of what you did was spontaneous but fun and geared towards something constructive for children.  Every time I went close to the door it sounded off and every time I would back away it would stop.  I finally looked up and said "OK MOM I'll stay a little longer".
As a result I went up stairs again and looked through one of the closets and found a bag full of old photos, some I had never seen before of you in the 50's and us when we were little. I had a great time looking through them occasionally getting emotional.  I took the bag and went back down stairs and as I approached the door the song went off again. I looked under the African drum table with the sheet of glass on it and found nothing, still the music played.  I looked in the sofa cushions for a musical card, but nothing was there.
Finally I looked under the couch, nothing....... I picked up a white coffee mug that was sitting on the drum and as I moved it closer to my face the song got louder, "You light up my life.......".  There was a hidden chip in the ceramic of the mug playing the song and for some reason when I would walk to the door the vibration would set it off.  I know it was you and you weren't ready for me to leave yet, which made me go up stairs and find the photos.   With the realization of this the song went off and wouldn't come on again.  I know you're still here with us in more ways than one and so does Cliff. We've talked about his increased energy at the school and sudden intuitions he has had to do things you would have done and we know................ Thank you for visiting us and staying with us. Until next time, we love you and think of you often.
One of your sons,
Mike

I was shocked and saddened by the news of Mrs. Davenport's passing. My sympathy goes out to her family, friends and the thousands of children that she has impacted throughout her amazing life. Mrs. Davenport's legacy is immeasurable and as God told Abraham in Exodus 32:13, "like the stars in the sky." I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that she was a classmate and soror of my Mom's at NC A&T University. I am in the process of enrolling my daughter in TOTS and although she will never meet Mrs. Davenport on this Earth, I know that she and all the children that pass through the doors at TOTS will have an incredible angel in Heaven!

I remember when I was at Tots School. Mrs. Davenport would tell stories about the many things that had happened in her life. I would always listen and get a little bit more engaged each time I heard the stories about her experiences in Ahoskie, and when Tots was started. I would love to listen to the stories on the front porch on nice sunny days. I have so many wonderful memories of Mrs. Davenport. Without Mrs. Davenport I would not have acheived the things I already have. She is my inspiration.

To: Clifford & the Davenport family:
My son Blair Lattisaw who is now 18 years old and in college attended Tots for several years. Many people often said Blair resembled Mrs. Davenport's grandson, Michael who also attended Tots at the same time as Blair. Thank you for the invaluable education that you provided to my son Blair in those early years. May peace cup your hearts gently as you deal with your loss. You are in our prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Davenport family in your time of grief. Your mother instilled in me values that still encompass me to this day. She always made us aware and proud of our heritage as African Americans and gave us a quality of education that is hard to find these days. She always gave us tough love which let you know that she cared for each and every one of her Tots children. She will be greatly missed.

March 21, 2008

I send my sympathy and condolences to the Davenport family. I was a student at Tots from about 1964 to 1966, when I was 3-5 years old. I have a memory of myself sitting at a table with other students, looking at a chart with letters and pictures and discovering how letters made sounds! I remember learning phonics and reading and how exciting it was for me. I remember the various rooms at Tots and some of our activities. I remember the playground on the roof! And sitting in our cubbies, and the smell of greens cooking, and the three sizes of toilets, and taking naps on cots, and going to the park wearing halloween masks. I credit Mr. and Mrs. Davenport with providing the early reading skills that set the foundation for my later academic success. Thank you Mrs. Davenport.

March 16, 2008

To the Family of Mrs. Davenport,

We often take things for granted and fail to just stop and take a minute to reflect and utter those most precious words "THANK-YOU"!

Mrs. Davenport provided our young ladies, Kamerron and Ashleigh Cooper a solid foundation for learning at a very early age. We often talk about the incredible structure, and no-nonsense environment at TOT's - and laugh or cry about it, but we remember it well, and then we smile. We do not want to miss this opportunity to say "Thank-you" for the memories. The legacy that Mrs. Davenport left to the families through out the Washington Metropolitan area will not be forgotten. Thank-you!!!

Mrs. Davenport, you not only provided an educational foundation for children, but you facilitated bringing people together for lasting relationships into the "TOT's Family". Thank-You!!

To the family of Mrs. Davenport, especially Clifford, Thank you for sharing her with so many of us and for keeping in touch with our children even beyond the TOT's walls. Thank you!! Though Mrs. Davenport's legacy can not be replaced, we are keeping you in our prayers that a new legacy will emerge for the current and future generations here in the Washington Metropolitan area. Please remember we are a village and there is lots of talent among us - reach out to your village if you need help. We love you and we will keep you all in our prayers.

Dr. Leslie Cooper,
Kamerron and Ashleigh Cooper,

(and the late Ronald Douglas Cooper - if he were here he would say thanks to all of you as well - he will tell Mrs. Davenport personally when they run into each other on the other side (smile))

To The Davenport Family:

Sending you a warm embrace of peace and comfort as your mother always hugged and loved me during my time at Tots Developmental Center in 1981 to 1984. I even had the opportunity to attend the summer camp in North Carolina for one summer in 1982.

Your mother shaped who I am today and I am proud to say that without your mother, your family and Tots, I would not be the activist and success that I am for your mother grilled it into me that I am a proud African American woman.

Further, Mrs. Davenport took me to get my first manicure at the age of 8. It was a life lesson for she taught me to always take care of myself and to be a "lady."

May the light of your Mother's eyes and the whispers of the angels in her presence continue to give you unrelenting strength.

Always,

To Clifford and the Davenport Family.

Memories of Ms. Daveport will live forever in my heart. Behind that tough exterior of Ms. Davenport was a gentle heart of gold. I am reminded of the wonderful teaching and mentoring that my daughter Aisha received while at Tots. As a parent of two former Tots students, I will always be in debt to Carlise Davenport for her amazing ability to motivate and teach. Her successes in nourishing the intellectual development of multiple generations of budding leaders will be felt for years to come thoughout the greater Washington area, the county, and even abroad. Through the successes of her "lambs" in academia, business and public service, Carlise's spirit will touch us all for years to come.

To the Davenport Family,

I will never forget my 6 years at Tots with Mrs. Davenport. I have vivid memories of all the activities, from the May Day play to "Zing zing zing and away we go". I learned to read, write, respect others and never give up. Mrs. Davenport was the best teacher, principal, and mentor any child could ask for. If it had not been for my wonderful experiences at Tots and Mrs. Davenport's immense influence, I would not be who I am today. I thank Mrs. Davenport for this and I will keep her in my heart forever!

To the Davenports:
I was truly saddened to hear that Carlise had passed. She was such an influence in the minds of so many children, my daughter Lisa included. Lisa attended Tots from the age of 2 yrs through Kindergarten. She also experienced summer camp in Carolina. Her educational experiences there were too many to count.

I will always remember Carlise as a powerful woman who was ahead of her time. May the many beautiful memories that you had with Carlise sustain you during this time of grieving. Remember, "Earth hath no sorrow that Heaven can not heal."

Mrs. Davenport had a warm and kind spirit that spoke to children who loved her despite her strict discipline. As Tot's parents you always had to be prepared to experience one of Mrs. Davenport's "teachable moments." If you could get over feeling like one of her students, you would always find the wisdom and love behind her words.

Now as a grandparents, we hope our grandchildren will have someone in their lives who loves them enough to dispense equal amounts of nurturing and discipline to both parents and children.

March 13, 2008

To the Davenport Family,

Each day that interact with our adult children, Jay and Kelly, we are reminded of the firm, correct, and brilliant education they received at Tots Developmental School. They were guided and inspired by Mrs. Davenport who was an absolute believer in the right approach to life. She not only taught them to read, write, perform and represent themselves with dignity and power, she provided them with an understanding of who they are in this world and an undeterred belief in what can be done once you put your mind and hard work into your ideas.

Your mother will be greatly missed but her legacy lives on in the lives of many who will never forget her influence. She stood tall and proud and she was dearly loved by the children who "all go to Tots School"

May God Bless you,

My deepest sympathies go out to the Davenport family. Ms. Davenport was a very good person who instilled knowledge, character, and pride into the lives of many children. As a grown person now with children of my own I have not found a school or environment that nurtures and cares for the children’s success and well being as much as Ms. Davenport did for me and countless others who have passed through the doors on Sheppard street. She will be missed for her toughness, love and kind spirit.

Clifford, Renee and family--
Words cannot express our heartfelt sympathy at the loss of Mrs. Davenport. With a firm, no nonsense voice and loving hand, she raised generations of professionals. To this day, Kennedy isn't afraid to show that she is "young, gifted and black," which we attribute to Mrs. Davenport's personal teaching and the Tots legacy. We are, and always will be, part of the Tots family, and we will never forget that. Be encouraged and know that you are in our prayers. Sincerely, Philip, Phyllis and Kennedy

I'd like to thank her for her positive influence on the lives of my children Dawn and Norman. As a result of that phenomenal great Tots start, they both know the importance of learning, giving, and sharing.

One who loved life and saw only the good in you. A friend to the young and the old.
Nobody wanted to mess with Ms. Davenport. She taught respect and demanded respect. I loved being in her company. I will miss her.
