Age 80, of Salisbury, MD and formerly of Potomac, MD, died Sunday, September 25, 2005.
Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Dan R. Silling, Sr. and Patsy B. Silling. Mr. Silling was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic church in Salisbury.Dan was a 1943 graduate of Gonzaga College High School and earned his BA degree from George Washington University.
Dan was an Army paratrooper serving as a sergeant in the third battalion, 511th Parachute Infantry during WW II, where he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He retired from the International Monetary Fund in 1980 with 30 years service as an economist. An avid lifetime golfer, he held memberships in Argyle Country Club in Layhill, MD, Bretton Woods in Potomac, MD and Green Hill Yacht & Country Club in Salisbury, MD. An ardent Redskins fan, he was a season ticket holder for over 50 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, R. Kelley Silling; daughter, Janet Palm and husband, Herbert of Easton; son, Gregory R. Silling and wife Amyjean of Simsbury, CT; two sisters, Joan O'Brien of Daytona Beach and Mary Ann Russell of Quantico; daughter-in-law, Shelley Zimmerman of Alpharetta, GA; nine grandchildren, Courtney, Kate, Matthew, Meghan and Bridget Palm; Sara and Sydney Silling; Gage Daniel Silling and Grace Zimmerman; and, numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Dan R. "Skip" Silling III.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Salisbury, Friday, September 30, 2005.
Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Joseph House, P.O. Box 1755Salisbury, MD 21802.
