Eleanor Carpenter Obituary

Eleanor "Ele" Fulton Carpenter died of natural causes on July 20, 2024 in Washington, DC. Ele was born on October 10, 1933 in Colón, Panama to Robert and Dorothea Fulton. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Bobby Fulton, her identical twin sister, Joyce Fulton, and her loving husband of 32 years, Chapin Carpenter Jr. Her marriage to John L. Chamberlain III ended in divorce. Ele is also survived by her three children, Carolyn Nazdin (Joel), Allison Basil (Will), and John L. "Chip" Chamberlain IV (Neusa Uberti), and by seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four stepdaughters and their eight children, siblings Diana Fulton-Manders (Robbie), Barbara Reese, Barry Fulton, Daisy Lewis, and Duncan Lewis, and a host of nieces and nephews.

In 1966, Ele moved with her young family to the Washington, DC area. Until that time, she had moved frequently around the country and abroad due to several factors: her father's promising military career, her mother's untimely death when Ele was 11, treatment of Ele's poliomyelitis which she contracted a few days after enrolling at Wellesley College in 1951, and her first husband's medical training and military service. Ele established many lasting personal friendships during her lifetime and she found spiritual fulfillment as a parishioner of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church for nearly 60 years. Ele also enjoyed a 32-year career at The Sidwell Friends School where she undertook an internship to complete her Master of Education, a degree she started at the University of Kentucky. Subsequently, she was hired by Sidwell's Upper School for teaching and administrative positions of increasing responsibility, including Director of Studies and Assistant Principal, which she held when she retired in 1998.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 4700 Whitehaven Parkway, NW, Washington, DC 20007.

Ele was a good family friend and helped me get into Sidwell in the 9th grade. She always had such a great smile. I gave her one of my first paintings, a copy of a Van Gogh country house which hung in her office for decades. I remember she started a class called "Decisions." I never took it but the concept is brilliant, because what is life but a series of important decisions?
RIP dear Ele.

A good friend and a good listener.

To the family of Eleanor Carpenter,
I learned of Eleanor's passing with great sadness. I worked with both Ele and Peggy Kane to help facilitate communication with Sidwell's Retired and Former Faculty and Staff. Eleanor cared deeply about her colleagues and the importance of community by keeping in touch with teachers and staff when they departed from the school and by sharing their contributions to the school community. As a parent of two Upper School students I was grateful for the support and guidance that she provided for students throughout her tenure.
My condolences go out to all of Ele's family, colleagues and friends.
With sympathy, Carol Borut
