I was there. I remember it as if it were yesterday. Miss his upbeat positive attitude. I was honored to be one of those to properly and with respect send him and his comrades home. We did capture 2 that were part of it. I will visit him one day. I'm always near Ridgeland. Its hard though.

Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

In Memory of Esau ~ ( Debra Estep )

May 1, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Esau, but I am remembering his service.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I was SSG. Pattersons Gunner in Hawaii. We(our section was a close nit group). When his pictured flashed across the tv while I was stationed in Columbia SC. I was stuned. Patterson had the utmost respect of his peers and anyone who came into contact with him. Thats just the way he carried himself. I will miss him as well as the 3/7 FA Family.

"I was in A 1/10 FA in Benning from 99 - 02. Esau carried such positive energy. He was a fine soldier, role model, and a leader. He was my brother in Christ and kept me strong. I'll never forget him. His tragic death occurred on my birthday. I still think about him often (today is 9-30-06). He and Angelo Johnson were absolutely incredible runners during our PT tests. I was honored to be a groomsman in his wedding. To Esau's family and Angelo Johnson's family: I am still praying and thinking about you. My telephone number is 307-760-3545."

What words can express the sadness a heart feels when a loved one is ripped away...unfortunately there are none that come close.

I am priviledged to have known Esau and was called his friend. We met during the time he was stationed in Hawaii. We attended the same church. The thing I remember most about Esau each time I saw him; his gentle, bright shining, ever-present smile. He was always so full of joy. There were times during service where the saints would be dancing and shouting, and there would be Esau, Angelo and I laughing our hearts out! It was a pleasure to worship the Lord with him through our laughter. Each time I hear the scripture "a merry heart doeth good like a medicine", I think of Esau.

Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, even when your son was away, he was always a respectable young man with a sweet southern charm. He showed the love of Christ to everyone.

To his wife, and children...you are in my prayers. I can't imagine your pain, but I do know that your loss is Heaven's gain. The Bible tells us that to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. I know Esau is sitting at His feet!

God Bless You All,

Tarasa Jones

Hello,

I would like to first say to the entire Patterson family that my prayers are still with you and will continue to be with you. It's been a year since you've seen his face heard his voice, laugh or even seen him smile. I know from experience that those are things that we miss the most, but always remember that all those things are still with you. Close your eyes open your heart and E.J. is there. He is watching over you guys hoping that you all have set aside the sadness and can only rember the fun times with him. I did not know E.J. personally, i'm a friend of Jamesha. Jamesha remain strong and know that E.J. loves you all. He also knew that you all loved him as well. Time marches on and the seasons change but E.J.'s legacy marches on threw each and everyone of you. So remember to be proud, hold your heads up and rejoyce in the fact of knowing, that he is in a better place.

Love Everyone,

Although it has been 1yr.,1mo.,and 15 days to this date (as of this signing)of SSGT Paterson's demise, the hurt still lingers and will continue to linger until his soul is reunited with his beloved family and all those who knew him personally. Young Patterson was a "true and unselfish warrior" who gave this country(along with his many fellow warriors)the highest gift a person can give; and to that end, he will not and should not ever be forgotton for generations to come in America, Iraq, and especially his hometown, RIDGELAND,SOUTH CAROLINA(JASPER COUNTY). To the entire Patterson family: We will forever feel your lost, for the death of any loved one is always hard to bare; but always take comfort in knowing that your "loved one" is in great care now with the 'Comforter', our Creator and the one only Johova Gira,'the prince of peace', our Lord Jesus Christ. No one on this earth or any other celestrial body can ever harm him again. May his bravery be a "shining light" and a "well lit path" for all of us on this great earth.
