Florence Stanley Obituary

Stanley

Florence Cahill Stanley (Age 73)

Florence Cahill Stanley of Washington, DC, died on August 13, 2023, of cancer. She was the only daughter of Joseph W. and Julienne H.C. Stanley, both of whom predeceased her. Also known as Flo to her many friends, Florence Stanley graduated from Stone Ridge School and Pine Manor College. She loved to travel, especially to Cape Cod and Nantucket, and enjoyed taking cruises to far-off destinations with friends. Like her father, Florence was an active member of genealogical societies, especially the Dames of the Loyal Legion of the United States, of which she previously served as President. Florence was a direct descendant of General David S. Stanley. He survived the Civil War despite having been shot through the neck and having his horse shot out from under him at the battle of Franklin, TN., in 1864. For his valor, David S. Stanley was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Abraham Lincoln. Florence liked to tell people that she came from strong stock. A lifelong Washingtonian, Florence Stanley was a member of the Sulgrave Club, the Army & Navy Club and the former Washington Club. She is survived by several cousins, many close friends and her faithful caregivers. Florence's wonderful sense of humor and love of life will be missed by all. A memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Washington. Donations in Florence's memory may be made to Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart.
