Frank Baechtel Obituary

BAECHTEL F. SAMUEL BAECHTEL Frank Samuel Baechtel passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Baechtel was the son of the late Harry A. and Elizabeth C. Baechtel. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, he joined the staff of South Western Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He spent 12 years at the school teaching and conducting cancer research. In 1982, he moved to Fredericksburg, VA to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation Laboratory Division at Quantico. He was a member of a very small research group that developed and adapted DNA typing methods for the criminal forensic field. After the development of the typing methods, he spent much time teaching these methods to police agencies from the United States. Before retiring from the F.B.I. in 2008, he worked with lawyers to help them understand DNA evidence used in trials. In passing, he wishes good health and joy to his family, friends, and colleagues at the F.B.I. A special thanks to all who took care of him during his many chemotherapy sessions. A quote from Sammy, "If there are angels, some toil as nurses at Hematology-Oncology Associates at Fredericksburg". Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Rebecca H. Baechtel; his son, Matthew S. Baechtel and his wife, Adrian; two grandsons, Mark and Ryan; and a granddaughter, Jordan. A celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 7 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, 4801 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Fredericksburg, Virginia 22408. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, c/o Trudy Clifton, 113 Tallpines Avenue, Locust Grove, Virginia 22508 or one''s favorite charity.
