FRANK STEINKE Obituary


FRANK COUNTS STEINKE  
LTC Frank Counts Steinke (Ret.) passed away Sunday, July 24, 2016 at age 88 in Fairfax Hospital. He was the son of Frank Dietrich Steinke and Lida Lee Counts and the brother of Catherine Elizabeth Steinke Greenwell (deceased).Colonel Steinke was born in Iaeger, West Virginia on December 6, 1927. He attended local schools and graduated from Welch High School in 1944. Next he entered the U.S. Marine Corps for a short time. He subsequently studied and graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Parks Air College (St. Louis University) in Cahokia, Illinois. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force as a second Lieutenant and was an active officer until his retirement in 1983. The following year, Colonel Steinke married Geraldine Mocogni. They maintained a home in Annandale, VA until Gerri's passing in 2002.Frank's interests included vegetable gardening, enhancing his knowledge of German, working as a senior election judge in Fairfax County, and watching Chicago Cub baseball.Surviving relatives include his nephew, Owen W. Greenwell, Huntington, WV; his nieces, Julia G. Janssen (Paul), Naperville, IL and Catherine E. Yanik (Joe), Emporia, KS.Frank enjoyed being a great-uncle to five and a grand-uncle to seven. Colonel Steinke's funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 3 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Interment at Fairfax Memorial Park.
