GARLAND LEE MYERS, JR.
Of Williamsburg, VA died peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at age 85. A native of Baltimore, MD, Garland moved to Williamsburg, in 2003, to provide Assisted Living for his then ailing wife of 62 years, Betty Jean, who preceded him in death in September 2004.
A veteran of WWII, Garland was a senior crew member of the boarding party sent by the U.S.S. Sutton (DE771) to accept and secure the surrender of "Hitler's Last U-Boat" (U-234), on May 14, 1945. Some historians believe that it is possible that the uranium oxide destined for Japan and seized that day (in addition to 240 tons of other advanced military technology cargo) was later enriched to make a portion of the nuclear fuel used in the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.
In providing for his family over the years, Garland was a welder, ship-fitter, milkman, roofing and framing carpenter, insurance salesman, and an automobile mechanic with an ability to do it right the first time. He later owned and operated successful automotive repair businesses, and leased several of his commercial real estate properties to other enterprises.
After selling his business and real estate holdings, Garland put his managerial skills to work as a Route, Sales and then General Manager for three commercial service businesses prior to his final retirement, in 1985. Garland was the best at doing what was required or expected of him in every aspect of his life as a son, brother, sailor, husband, father, friend, employee, employer, manager and person.
Also preceded in death by his younger brother and business partner, Brenton Ellsworth. He is survived by his two sons, Garland Lee, III of Williamsburg, VA and Garrett Craig of Lake Ridge, VA; and three grandchildren, Natalie Beth of Manassas, VA, Garrick Paul of Boston, MA, and Kimberly Leigh Taylor of Ashburn, VA, mother of great-grandchild, Rebeka Burns. He is dearly loved and remembered by all.
A Memorial Service to entomb his ashes with his beloved wife will be held at the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, 200 East Padonia Road, Lutherville-Timonium, MD on Saturday, February 10 at 11 a.m.
