Hawk... I am the last to leave you a message. It took me a long time to do this, because it still doesnt seem right that you are gone. I remember the first time I met you, almost 10yrs ago on Geralds 18th Bday. You made fried Hamburgers, Gravy, and Rice, and the absolute BEST chocolate cake I ever had!! I will sincerely miss you, your cakes, and most of all your spirit. You were the greatest father, and grandfather that anyone could have. You showed your son, my husband everything that he knows now. You made him the man he is today. Believe it or not, so much of you lives in him, it seems like you are still here. You never missed a birthday party, or christmas with my girls. I am so sorry that Nevaeh will never really know you, and Gabby will trully miss you. She says she misses you almost everyday. Your "Gabs baby-luv".. At your homegoing, I know you were so proud of her. She sang her little heart out for you.... Well, I know that you had just found out that I was "watchacall" (smile) only a few weeks before you went to heaven. Oddly enough, as you said, "Nikki be 4-5mos. gone before I find out"....And, I was exactly that when I told you! (smile) Well, you would be honored to know, FINALLY its a boy, and his name will be none other than that of his Grandfather, and his Father, Gerald LeCount Awkard III. I just wanted you to know, its more than an honor to be able to pass that down to your grandson, and I will make sure he wears it with pride. You will never EVER be forgotten in my family. I will trully miss you more than you will ever know. Your spirit will live on...

To My Family Members and Friends:
For the next moment, with YOU, I'd like to SHARE a little time in Rememberance of Gerald and few of Our Life Experiences. We are 1st cousins, yet were as close as Brothers in our youth and great portions of our Adult Life. I remember...... When the Police would bring Germ (age 5) back to 314 M Street, SW in the back of the "scout car" with a great big Grin on his face 'cause he walked off from the house repeatedly, just to ride back to The House. For a while, as youngsters we resided together, shined shoes, shoveled snow, delivered telephone books, mopped and waxed floors and many other odd jobs we labored together (often with the oversight and example of HBM along side us) making Honest Bucks along the way. When it came to Being there for ME*even under the most adverse conditions. (Contact ME* and I'll share some of them in detail) I got my first car at 16, Gerald was the first I taught to to drive it, and well he did, although he was just 13. Yes it was a 3 speed transmission on the column. (with his old-looking, tall, smart self) We went to Night Clubs to listen to music on U Street, cleaner than the Board of Health. I was 18, he was 15. He and Shorty helped to teach ME* to Hand-Dance. Man, that Rascal could Glide Across the Floor with the Best of them. Get the picture folks? No one could Mock my DAD like Germ. (by the way, my Dad knew he was doing it, but it was performed so well, even Uncle Andy laughed.) Oftentimes, We were as ONE! In closing, I'd like to SHARE with Great Humility, family and friends, that we are extensions of those who helped bring each of us into This World. We are Spiritual Beings presently living in a Physical World. Gerald LeCount Awkard's spirit will ever be with us as long as we allow. I am Everso Honored to have shared the the time, space and energies through this life with him. He's made his mark.
Blessings,
ME*

To my "Daddy":
No one really knows of our special bond, and the many, many talks that we had just mulling over life's many speed bumps that were bestowed upon me.
I need you to know that as God's my witness your legacy will continue through your sons, grandsons and others.
I find it difficult even today to write this, but I'm finding the strength as the words filter through my heart and out on this page that you are no longer here with us.
I will forever and ever cherish the fond memories that I have of you and will always use the advice that you often gave to me. I will continue to strive to be a better person, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend all because of "YOU".
May you rest in eternal peace.
Love your baby girl,
Kim

dear mother-hon & family,
words dont do hawkeye justice. there are no words or phrases to tell exactly what he meant to so many people. i knew him a short time, but i knew enough to know i love him and always will. cookies dont seem like a fair trade for all he gave me in the short time he was in my life, and regretfully i wont get the chance to show him my gratitude for his friendship in this world. my hope is to do good enough to get to repay him in the next. my goal to strive for is to be half the father, and 1/3 the man he is.... and if i succeed, i will have done this world and my child justice.
god bless and keep you all. see you later, hawkeye... thanks for everything.

Gerald,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your father, Hawkeye. I know that he will be missed by all but, most of all by my father. They were like to peas in a pod.. there were so many times that I called him and they were together just hangin' out.
Hold on the memories that you had with him and keep them close to your heart for later you will need them.

"HAWKEYE",
My #1 FAVORITE Cousin,(But you already knew that) Where do I begin,"Thank You for everything!" You always asked why I made such a fuss over you? It was simply because of who you were. Even as a teenager, you always made time to talk to me and use Wisdom (which you later called MOTHER WIT) to keep me on track. It was because of your influence and being a role model that played a part of who I ultimately became. In 1979 YOU saved me from being locked up. When I joined the Army and couldn't get into the computer field, I became a Military Policeman, and the rest is history. After that my life began to Mirror yours. You were a decorated Policeman, I followed suit. Later, You were dealing with a teenaged son who was trying to understand why his (Police) father was so hard on him. I too went through the same thing at the same time. (Thanks for listening to my Jr, I enjoyed listening to yours.) They both realized that all we wanted for them was the best out of life. (It's scary to see a second generation of us in them with their closeness.) Look at the fathers that they have become. Thanks for sharing all the life experiences, the law enforcement, the fathering, the grandfathering, the fishing, the range time, the traveling time, your loyalty, for being my FRATERNAL BROTHER ,but most of all for just being YOU! Cousin, I'm going to truly miss you! I'll do everything within my power to make sure your LEGACY lives on through your children and your grandchildren. Those dreams that you shared with me for your grandchildren; I'm already on it! I haven't quite figured out where we'll put the horses, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it! "I LOVE YOU and MISS YOU MAN!" I don't no who you left the recipe with so, Till we meet again, I'll be saving my "Mayarnaise Jar".
