HARIHARAN ESWARAN (Age 73)  
Of Arlington, VA, died Monday, April 14, 2014 inVirginia Hospital Center, Arlington. A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Malaysia. Hariharan (Hari) Eswaran was born in Kluang, Johore, Malaysia. Hari graduated from English College, Johore, Malaysia and the University ofMalaya, Malaysia. He earned a Master's degree and PhD in Soil Science from Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Washington, DC, in 2010. As National Leader, World Soil Resources, USDA NRCS, Hari led an international effort providing technical assistance in soil survey, soil conservation and soil fertility. During his 30 year career, he worked with scientists in over 100 countries helping to promote better land management in support of sustainable agriculture world-wide. The Soil Science Society of America made him a Fellow in 1993 and in 2012, he was honored by the International Union of Soil Science with the Guy Smith Medal for Soil Classification. He was the son of the late, E. Harihara Iyer and leaves behind his beloved mother Gomathy Mangalam, four sisters, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, and their respective spouses, grand nieces and nephews to mourn his loss.

Dr. Eswaran will be missed by many. I watched him lead others in a variety of situations. He was brilliant, a gentleman, and a friend to many. His contributions were imaginative, unique and important. Deep condolences to family and close friends.

Great Person and Teacher in the field. I have learned from him a lot concerning the sustainable management of soils and will pursue for our mutual cause the 'Anthroscape' which he had named to define the human driven soil eco-systems.
