HARRY BAILEY Obituary

Captain HARRY E. BAILEY  US NAVY (Retired)
CAPTAIN BAILEY died on March 9, 2016 from Alzheimer''s. He was a lifelong athlete and sportsman and wanted to say goodbye in his own words. "This has been a wonderful life! I have had the privilege to serve our great country for over 31 years from the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam to Desert Storm (First Gulf War); I have sailed in every sea and Ocean on the planet except the Antarctic; and have had the honor to serve with the best sailors and Marines in the world. To my shipmates, Fair Winds and Following Seas...to my Marines, Semper Fi! A man is blessed to have a loving family and faithful friends, I have been such a man. To my children, Todd, Deborah and Leigh Ann, their spouses Anita, Kevin and Jeff; to my grandchildren Ali, TJ, Brigid, Eddie, Caelan, Tyler and Molly...you have my heart and pride. To my friends, I am honored that we have shared this life together, thank you! I will miss you all! To GRACIE, my extraordinary service dog, we found each other just in time and shared a special bond. And to my best friend, my partner in life for over 50 years, the Love of my Life, Audrey. I will be with you forever, Harry" Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, aides and trainers who have been with us on this journey. We ask that in lieu of flowers you consider donating to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Paws4People Foundation and the Alzheimer''s Organization or a charity of your choice in CAPTAIN Bailey''s memory. A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2016 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined. Peacock - Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, Southport.

To Audrey, Todd, Deborah and Leigh Ann and the extended Bailey Family, may God Bless Harry and each of you.

Linda and I send our sincere condolences at this time. We first encountered the Bailey Family in about 1968 in Norfolk, Virginia. Since that time, we have maintained contact with not only some of the oldest, but also dearest friends we have. Harry was a fine naval officer and sailor who dearly loved his wife and family. We are honored to have known him and to have counted him a friend.

We hope to attend the inurnment in Arlington.

Glenn and I were so sorry to hear of Harry's passing. We have a lot of fond memories having been neighbors in Winston Salem when you both moved in across the street. Harry always had a smile on his face and was such a delight to talk to and be around. Harry was such a kind and gentle man, was always positive, and proud of his military service. He had such devotion to his family and pets. We will cherish our time as neighbors and friends. Pat and Glenn Herbst

I had the honor to care for the Captain for a short time.. But a short time is all I needed to be blessed by him. Even on bad days he made my heart smile. He had a heart of pure gold. Every time I hear Johnny Cash or old time gospel hymns I think of the CAPTAIN, every time I go to the gym I think of the captain even at times I just want to be lazy I can hear him saying "if I can do, you can do it" he was my inspiration and as always fuzzy peach after, thanks to the captain for your blessings on me and thank you Audrey for sharing the special captain, I will always remember The Bailey's and be blessed by the Great captain.. My prayers are with the family.

We thank you for all the kindnesses the Bailey's have provided to the Cohn's over the years. "Fair Winds and Following Seas" to our shipmate, Captain Bailey. May God bless the Bailey Family.
