Mr. Allen,

First, please allow me to extend my condolence to you and your family. After reading the article today, November 19, it left me with tears of sadness and joy. Sadness because I know you are going to miss your wife of 65 years but joy because "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful love story with us. After being married to my husband for 22 years, I found this story to be an inspiration to those of us who long for lengthy and healthy marriages. Please share your secret if you don't mind. May God bless you and give you the strength to persevere.

I didn't know Mrs. Helene Allen, but I received an email from a co-worker on yesterday (11-17-08) about the wonderful story and what a great couple they were and the life they lived. I am sure Mrs. Allen would be proud of our President Elect if she had lived to vote. My condolences go out to the entire Allen Family.

To the Allen Family:

I did not know Mrs. Allen but I read the story about Mr. Allen in the Washington Post which had me in tears especially it is a love story that you don't hear about much anymore and his dedication to his work and at the end when I learned that Mrs. Allen pasted away before she could cast her vote for our new President it was so sad. I have no doubt that she is smiling from above and singing with all the angels as she looks down on each of you keeping each of you surrounded with her love.

Gene and Charles,

Sorry that I was not able to attend the services. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Miss Helene will always hold a special place in my heart. I will always cherish the memories of spending a few days at your house during the Christmas Holidays when I was younger.

I just read the Post article about Eugene and Helene Allen, and I felt the need to post. It was so inspirational that I felt the need to post. She seemed like a great person, a true role model, and the love her and Eugene had showed through the words in the newspaper. Helene might not have been able to cast her vote, but she had a prime seat in watching Senator Barack Obama become President-Elect Barack Obama.

Helene was one of my favorite cousins and a life-long friend. We didn’t see each other often, but we kept in touch by phone weekly - something we did since I came to Washington, DC in 1946. We had many joyful moments talking about our families, our lives, and about our experiences growing up in North Carolina on the farm. Gene and Charles - you are close in my thoughts and prayers. I will miss her terribly -- "Cousin Bruce”

May God forever Bless, and keep you in his care.

I am moved to tears by the story and the untimely death. Like President Obama's grandmother she died too soon - but had the "best seat in the house" for a truly momentous day in our country's history. I wish you peace.

I just read the article in Friday's Washington Post. I was shocked to learn that Mrs. Allen had died. Although the article was about Mr. Allen, one got the sense that Mrs. Allen was a strong influence in the background.
May God extend his hand over your family and be with you now during this trying time and in the years to come.

I read your story this morning in the Washington Post and had to give you my condolences.
Your history will be written on the wings of time for all the world to see. May God confort you in this time of transition. May the 65 years of Love that you and Helene shared wrap you like a blanket until the Day that you see each other again in Glory.
