JACQUES GANSLER Obituary

JACQUES SINGLETON GANSLER "Jack"
On December 4, 2018, Jacques "Jack" Singleton Gansler, age 84, died peacefully at his home from complications of melanoma. He was the beloved husband of Leah; loving father of Gillian, Douglas and Christine; father-in-law of Michael Kanell; and adoring grandfather to Jenna, Vance, Samuel, William and Kaitlin.  Jack was an extraordinary man. His intellect, humanity and passion for his work on behalf of our nation was inspiring, as were his humility and quiet sense of humor. He accomplished much - earned two masters and a PhD; was considered one of the best professors at Harvard, University of Virginia and University of Maryland; wrote 10 books and hundreds of articles; and as Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisitions, Technology and Logistics changed the way the DoD does business.  He was loved dearly by his family who will never forget him. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the University of Maryland Chapel.

Jacques (the Honorable Dr. Jack Gansler) was a tremendous role model and inspiration for a young economist and professor at the Naval Postgraduate School, and kindly contributed to an edited volume "Military Cost-Benefit Analysis: Theory & Practice" published in 2015. I will always be grateful for his great ethics, wisdom, teaching, and service to the country, and for his impressive body of research advancing the ongoing quest for cost-effective ways to improve the nation's security.

Leah, Doug and I were so very sorry to read of Jack's passing. We had opportunities to speak with him a few times over the years and related to each other that he was such a nice man and true gentleman. No doubt he will be missed by your family and the community who loved and respected him. Xxoo Eloise and Doug Poretz

My heart is saddened. Jack was a close friend and great supporter of mine when I was the Director of the Defense Logistics Agency. He will be missed by all. My condolences and love to his family.
