Jeremy M. Black
Jeremy M. Black, 53, beloved husband, father, son, brother, nephew, and uncle, passed away needlessly from gun violence on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. Jeremy is the husband of Cathy Feingold and father of two sons, Myles, 17, and Alex, 15. He dedicated his professional life to international development. After earning an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis, he served as a volunteer for the Peace Corps in the Comoros Islands, leading to a lifelong passion of promoting a deeper understanding between people across and within borders. Jerry went on to receive his graduate degree from the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, along with his wife, Cathy Feingold. Jerry and Cathy worked together at the Ford Foundation before moving to Washington, DC, where Jerry worked at the Aspen Institute as the director of MicroTest, a program that gave grants to microenterprise development organizations across the U.S.In 2007, Jerry and his family moved to the Dominican Republic, where he found his love for triathlon and endurance sports. In 2010, they moved back to the DC Area, and Jerry returned to the Peace Corps to work in the Office of the Inspector General.Jerry was an avid golfer, having spent much of his teenage years in Wichita, Kansas, working and practicing at his local golf course-regularly playing 36 holes a day. He had hoped to someday play on the professional senior golf circuit. He applied this work ethic to his other passions, which included running, music-he played the trumpet and guitar-and karate, which he started in 2019 at the encouragement of his sons, both of whom hold advanced ranks in non-traditional Tang Soo Do.He was born on January 4, 1968, in Strasbourg, France, and moved soon after to Bloomington, Indiana, then throughout the Midwest. He is the beloved son of retired minister Reverend Jeffrey Black and Barbara Black and son-in-law to Ron and Carole Feingold. He leaves behind a loving sister, extended family, and a global community of dear friends.Celebration of life scheduled for later date. During the two years of Peace Corps volunteer in Compris Islands, all the population in Sima, his village knew him. Gentil man, calm, teacher of English at the secondary Scholl. Sima doesn't forget you.

On Sunday, I offered a public prayer for you, dear Cathy, and your family during our morning service at St. Mark´s Capitol Hill. I asked that you be comforted and surrounded by love. Each day since beloved Jerry died, I ask in the Buddhist tradition that your suffering be lessened and lifted. ( Thankfully, St. Mark´s has been committed to action against gun violence and annually hosts national gatherings of activists. ) All my love, Louise

A man who was created and raised in the spirit and love of God, who dedicated his life to helping others across the world, how we lost you to such a tragic event is beyond comprehension. A gentle kind man who was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, friend, coworker, and humanitarian --and my brother in law who impressed me with his culinary skills, gift of music and guitar, watching him with his wife and sons, his athleticism, and his kind spirit...I was so lucky to have known him, and I will miss him very much at family gatherings. It is a great loss to the family, a big strong link in the chain has been broken and lost. We will miss you Jerry, and I will miss you giving me some golf pointers too. Godspeed my friend.

I knew Jerry from when our kids were in diapers and we spent more than a few hours watching them run around and play at the playground. I never met a more loving and supportive father. He told me more than once the story of how he met Cathy. Nothing is more senseless than this and my heart goes out to his whole family and circle of friends.
