I walked into the Atlanta art of Boxing building in 1998, met Johnny, trained with him and his team of coaches, and loved every minute of it. When I moved back to Seattle in 2009, he referred me to boxing coaches he knew out here. He was a terrific coach, an accomplished man, and a wonderful person. He will be missed by everybody who was blessed to have crossed his path.

My condolences to the family. After knowing Johnny for a few years through my husband Nathaniel "Buck" Payne we found out that I am a cousin of his on his grandmother's side. We kept in touch from that point as we shared our family history. I will miss talking to him and his surprise visits when he came to D.C. to visit his immediate family. I am praying for you Brenda, Felice and Family may the love of God comfort all of you. Rest In Peace Johnny.

Johnny came out to our gym about 50 years ago to help another local boxing legend, Gary Garber, teach us the basics of the "sweet science". I recall he was very nice, extremely knowledgeable and very patient with 9-10 year olds. RIP Johnny and condolences to your family.
