John Hagner Obituary

John David Hagner (79), of Rockville, Maryland, passed away on March 13, 2025, after a long illness. He died with his wife, children, and pastor at his bedside.

John leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Lee Ellen ("Ellie") Hamm Hagner; children, Chris (Allison), Kate (Tom Jelen), and Drake (Beau Archer) Hagner; eight grandchildren; brother, Charles (Rae) Hagner, sister-in-law Carolyn Zepf Hagner, and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Philip and Margaret Drake Hagner, and brother, Gerald Hagner.

Born in 1945 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati (1968) with a degree in mechanical engineering. The US Public Health Service brought him to Bethesda, Maryland to serve at NIH. John earned his law degree at night from Georgetown Law (1973). Later, he returned to Georgetown for 21 years of adjunct teaching.

John was a founding partner of David, Hagner, Kuney & Davison (1977-1998), which merged with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, LLP, where John practiced commercial real estate law until retiring in 2023. He was a trusted counselor and gifted negotiator. John provided legal expertise to many charities and Saint Mark Presbyterian Church where he and Ellie were long-term members for 52 years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church, 10701 Old Georgetown Road, Rockville, MD 20852. A reception will follow. The service will be live-streamed at www.pumphreyfuneralhome.com. Memorial donations may be made to Saint Mark Presbyterian Church.
