John Richard Porter Wilson

On Thursday, July 13, 2023, John Richard Porter Wilson, aka "Rick", loving husband of Yuki and father of daughter, Andrea, passed away after battling brain cancer. He was 58 years old. Rick was diagnosed with "Glioblastoma," a form of brain cancer, two years prior, which he fought courageously.

Rick was born in Montgomery, Alabama, the youngest child of four children of Charles and Helen Wilson. After graduating from The Landon School in Bethesda in 1983, he went on to study History at Middlebury College in Vermont.

After graduating from Middlebury College in 1987, he pursued his passion, music, and played in numerous bands in Vermont. He later moved to San Francisco where he continued to pursue music, while also starting a recording/ audio engineering career.

In 1999, while Rick was working as an audio engineer in San Francisco, he met his future wife, Yuki, a classical pianist, who was his client at that time. They were married at St. Francis Church, Potomac, MD, after which they settled in Oakland, California. Two years later, they moved to Maryland before the birth of their daughter, Andrea, in 2004.

In Maryland, Rick pursued a career in Technology and Web Design. While working full time as they raised their young family, Rick earned an Associates Degree in Web Development/Design at Montgomery College.

His last professional role was as IT manager at the Education Writers Association, a role he held until earlier this year.

He is survived by his loving wife, Yuki, daughter, Andrea, father, Charles (Chuck), brother, Chris, and sister, Cathy.

The Celebration of Life Service honoring Rick will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 29 at 11 a.m. The address is 10033 River Road, Potomac, MD 20854

The family requests donations to be made to either Glioblastoma Foundation, or Casey House, a Hospice facility of Montgomery Hospice in lieu of flowers.

I was lucky to have Rick as my freshman year roommate at college and couldn“t have hoped for a better companion. We met in D.C. shortly before the school year began and had an instant connection. He was funny, smart, easygoing and had great music. We shared a lot of laughs and I really regret not being able to meet up for various reasons during my trips to Washington. I was just thinking about him the other day when I heard the terrible news. I knew he had been ill and dealing bravely with things but this came as a shock. My thoughts are with his family. He will be greatly missed.

I met Rick while working with EWA to redesign their website. All I can say is my short time knowing Rick is that he was and is still, a kind, giving, and immensely memorable man who gave a significant portion of himself to others. He is deeply missed and never forgotten.

One of the absolute kindest, wittiest and most compassionate people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Love you forever, Uncle Rick.

Ricky was special. Unique in his gentle demeanor and level of kindness. He has left of way too soon.
