Kokonis

Louis Peter Kokonis

Louis Peter Kokonis passed away peacefully at his home on January 4, 2024, at the age of 91. Louis was a beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and granduncle. He is preceded in death of the late Matina (Zack) Zambetis and survived by Nicholas (Athena) Kokonis; nephews and nieces Thomas (Angela) Zambetis, Peter Kokonis, Christine (James) Hylton, Angela (Andrew) Hylton, and Georgia (Constantine) Jones. Louis is also survived by many grand-nephews, grand-nieces, cousins, friends, colleagues, and numerous students.

Louis' parents immigrated to the United States from Greece, became naturalized citizens, and settled in Washington, DC to raise their family, where his father owned a restaurant. A native Washingtonian, Louis attended DC public schools, graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School, served in the United States Army, and later earned his teaching degree from the District of Columbia Teachers College. Over the years, he continued his education by earning three master's degrees.

Louis was a dedicated educator who taught all levels of mathematics - algebra, geometry, and calculus - for over 60 years in the Alexandria City Public School system, the longest-serving member in its history. He was most known for teaching AP Calculus AB and BC, DE Calculus III, and Differential Equations. He began his teaching career in 1959 at Francis C. Hammond Middle School, and then moved to Alexandria City High School King Street (formerly T.C. Williams High School), where he remained for the rest of his career. Throughout his career, Louis received several awards and was honored for his dedication to teaching. Most notably, the Virginia General Assembly recognized him with a House joint resolution in 2019 to formally commend Louis for his service to the city of Alexandria and its students, and the Louis Kokonis Teaching Legend Scholarship was established in 2018 for students of Alexandria City Public Schools to attend postsecondary education.

A celebration of life for students, former students, friends, and colleagues will be held on Wednesday, January 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Alexandria City High School.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 19 at 12 p.m. at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 721 Norwood Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20905. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to either the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Washington, DC or to the Louis Kokonis Scholarship fund: https://www.alexscholarshipfund.org/donate/

Mr. Kokonis was my math teacher in the very early 80s. He was ahead of his time! I never felt a whiff of sexism or judgment from him. I went on to obtain a PhD in a STEM field and I can say that his patient, careful teaching helped give me the skills and confidence to do this (along with other great teachers from TC at the time). I have followed the news stories about Mr. Kokonis in recent years and he continues to be an inspiration to me in my own career. His ~7000 students were lucky to have him! I will also share a brief story. One Christmas, a group of his math students got the idea to go caroling at his apartment. I think we scared him - we were kind of like stalkers! He probably wondered how we even knew where he lived (sleuthing). It was our strange little teenage way of showing affection, I guess.

Mr. Kokonis was my algebra teacher when Hammond was a high school in 1964. I so enjoyed his class, and he kept encouraging me to take more upper level math classes. After our 50th high school reunion in 2016, I wrote him a thank you note and told him about my career success. He wrote me back saying how proud he was that at times in my life I had been a "teacher." Thank you Mr. K for making algebra and trigonometry fun!!
