Margit Hamosh Obituary

HAMOSH MARGIT HAMOSH, Ph.D. Of Bethesda, MD, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend died on Friday, November 4, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was 78 years old. Dr. Hamosh survived the holocaust. She was born in Germany but spent the war years in Romania and immigrated to Israel in 1950. While pursuing her PhD from Hadassah University in Jerusalem, she met her husband, Paul Hamosh, and they married in 1954. Dr. Hamosh had a long and distinguished scientific career that focused on the study of human milk and neonatal digestion. In 1970, she discovered lingual lipase, a digestive enzyme. She moved to the US in 1965for a scientific sabbatical at the National Institutes of Health. She enjoyed her work and stayed in the US and at NIH until 1974 when she began her tenure at Georgetown University, where she retired in 1998 as Professor Emerita. A devoted wife, she is survived by her husband, Paul Hamosh. They were married for 57 years and enjoyed a lifelong romance, sharing a home, family, office, and scientific career always together. An exemplary and affectionate mother, she is survived by her children, Ada Hamosh, Leora Hamosh and Tamar Hamosh Taddei. Each followed her in the pursuit of an academic career in medicine and science. She was cherished by sons-in-law, Harry Dietz and Christopher Taddei; and grandchildren, Nina Dietz, Livia, Charlotte, and Thomas Taddei who will miss their beloved "Oma." An only child, she diligently cared for her mother, Clara Segenreich, until her death in 2009 at the age of 101. Dr. Hamosh's hobbies included travel and the fine and performing arts. She traveled all over the world with Paul, and they availed themselves of every opportunity to go to the museums and attend the performing arts at home and abroad. She made many friends during her travels and scientific collaborations and these friendships have endured for decades. She possessed a "joie de vivre" unlike anyone else and an infectious, intelligent charm that captivated friends and family alike. The funeral will be held on Sunday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Danzansky-Goldberg Memorial Chapel, 1170 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Liver Research Fund at the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Checks should be made payable to AASLD and mailed to: AASLD 1001 N. Not sure what to say?

February 21, 2012

Dear Dr. Hamosh and Family,

It is with great sadness that I just learned of the passing of your wife, mother and grandmother today from Theresa Henderson. Though my time at Georgetown was short, I have very pleasant memories of my interactions with both you, Paul, and Margit. Furthermore, I have great respect for the person she was and her professional achievements. Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences.

Dear Paul and Family,
I am so terribly sad for your loss, and it took me time after you called me at the lab in France, Paul, announcing me the bad news, to be able to express my feelings. I will always remember Margit as a smiling great lady with so many human values. It has been a real privilege to share with you some months of my life, at a scientific level (that still inspires my research today), but much more at a human level. I keep in mind our discussions, Margit's advices, the histories and the strength of your family, the passion for the arts and for the good wine, for the life...

Bien a vous,
Love

Dear Paul
As the current President of ISRHML and on behalf of all ISRHML members past and present I would like to express our sympathy to you and your family on the sad paaing of Margit. My memories track back to the Mexican earthquake and the rescheduled Oaxaca Scientific meeting, which through the efforts of Margit, in particular, consolidated the formation of ISRHML. Her research and her inputs into the discussions of many scientific presentatiions over the years will be long remembered. Please accept our sincere condolences.

Dearest Paul and family,

I first met Margit 21 years ago at Georgetown for my job interview - with my newborn daughter. I was a new mother with no experience with babies and Margit told me that she was so afraid to give her first newborn (Ada)a bath that Paul had to come home from the hospital every night at bathtime. We shared a laugh and then got down to business. She was my boss, teacher, and friend. Her spirit lives on in all of us.
Love,

Kathy Rasmussen

Dear Paul, I have heard with sorrow about the death of Margot. I appreciated so much her engagement in the founding of the ISRHML and the devoted work Margot and you spent for the arrangements of its meetings, not least the one in Mexico many years ago.
Please accept my deepest sympathy in your sorrow,

Paul--I was very saddened by the news. Margit was certainly a good role model for folks like myself. She was focused on the hard core science behind human milk and lactation. Would probably have never gotten to know either of you if it had not been for ISRHML. I cherish many of her presentations there including the one about the work on seal pups floating on the ice floes in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Please accept my heart felt condolences, but she will live on in our wonderful memories of her life.

Dear Paul and family,

It is with great sadness that we learned of your loss. Margit was a wonderful person, scientist, and role model for so many. We first heard stories about "The Hamoshes" when Shelley was working on her masters degree with Mary Frances, and these stories continue to inspire us. We especially enjoy "If they want to know which ideas come from whom, they will have to put a microphone under the bed." Margit will be greatly missed but her legacy will live on.

With warmest regard,

Dear Hamosh family
I m so sorry to hear of the death of Margit.
I remember very fondly the year I worked in your lab, Paul, before I went to medical school. I remember Margit frequently visiting the lab full of spirit and academic discussions.

Dear Paul Ada and Tamar
I truely share in your loss of the most wonderful individual who made and indelible mark on everybody that she came in contact with however fleeting the contact may have been.
To me Margit has been a mentor who took a totally naive and almost ignorant trainee in me and imbibed lovingly many qualities
that helped start my academic career. She was the constant

source of encouragement as well as enlightenment to me. In her
affable ways she managed to instill dedication and discipline to
keep my efforts in focus and helped me in my success.
Besides providing us constant guidance in our research endeavors she never filed to make sure we were well fed and our smallest of other needs were taken care of during the often demanding and long days in her lab. Margit would often hover around us just like a concerned mother even to the extent of shielding us from Paul's strict mandates!
I know she is in a better place but I like you will miss her. Shobha and I pray with you for her peace.
