MICHAEL ANGEL ALVAREZ (Age 86)
How lucky you were if you knew Michael Angel Alvarez. He was one of the nicest guys you could meet; always upbeat and eager to spread some good cheer, some laughs and a prank if you weren't careful. He came from the greatest generation; born a Gemini on the 26th of May in 1925 to his parents, Angel and Raquel Alvarez. At age 17, eager to join his two brothers, he proudly served in World War II as a Naval recruit. The luckiest day of his life, he met his wife of 59 years and 8 months, Delia Fernandez, a Cuban visiting her sister here in the United States of America. They had two sons, Mike and Danny, and they did live happily ever after. Dad was dedicated to his Family first but also to his work and service. This included 20 years in the Navy and another 28 years for NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center, where he worked as an analyst at the dawn of the Space Shuttle Program. A resident of Fairfax County since 1961, he passed away peacefully at his home in Fairfax, with family at his side on Dec. 14, 2011. A true "Angel", our father is survived by his wife, Delia; his sister, Herminia; his sons, Michael and Danny; and their wives, Julie and Marie; the grandchildren, Melanie, Brandon, Justin, Jessica, Amber and Alexandra and the great-grandkids, Stevie, Christian, Jaden and Lilly. We sorely miss your smiling face, Dad. You will always remain close in our hearts. Until we meet again, porta te bien!A memorial service will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032 on Tuesday, December 20 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org).www.fmfh.com

Dearest Delia,
We will miss Mike greatly. He was a wonderful, big hearted, kind soul. Justin and Carter adored him - he always managed to make them laugh. He was a dear friend and companion to Mami and Papi. Chris and I will miss his wonderful smile that lit up a room.
We love you dearly Delia. Please know that you are in our thoughts.

He was my uncle and whenever one of his ships pulled in to New York Harbor he would come to visit his sister(my mom) and have dinner with us. He would love to eat the Greek Salad at my home because he loved the good (imported) Feta that we always had. It was always a big treat when Uncle Mikey came for a visit. And yes, his joy and happiness were indeed infectious.

Aunt Delia,
