NANCY SMITH Obituary

Nancy Clark Smith (Age 79)
Of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died suddenly of heart failure on January 9, 2020. Born Nancy Katherine Clark in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 20, 1940 to Mary Louise and Horace Clark. Nancy graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1961 and pursued postgraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and the London School of Economics. Her wanderlust led her to living in Beirut, Lebanon, teaching English, as well as traveling extensively throughout the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, and Europe.  Her marriage to John Summerfield Pearson ended in divorce in 1976. Her subsequent marriage to Walter Burges Smith II, in 1978, included a foreign service posting in East Berlin. Upon their return, she worked as an analyst for Merrill Lynch. She was a lifetime voracious reader and had a remarkable ability to retain historic facts. She was also a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.  She is survived by her three daughters, Sarah Bentley Pearson, Caroline Clark Pearson, and Lydia Smith Alvarez, her four stepchildren, Katrina V. V. Smith, Marian G. P. Smith, Burges S. Smith, and Matthew W. H. Smith, and her brother, niece, and three grandchildren. She will be buried in Swan Point cemetery, Providence, RI. The celebration of life gathering will be held in her honor on Saturday, February 8, 2020. Please visit nancyclarksmith.com for details.
