Richard Howell Obituary
Richard Lee Howell II "Rich"
Richard "Rich" Lee Howell II, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at his home in Mount Jackson, VA. Rich was born on May 17, 1947, in Hannibal, MO, and was the son of the late Richard and Haseltine Hayes Howell. He is survived by his wife Lynn Howell; a cousin, Kevin Howell, and his wife Lisa; and their children Jessica Howell-McPhail, and her husband Josh; and Lauren Howell-Mills and her husband Stevie.
Rich was in the United States Army and retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel with more than 20 years of service. After he left active duty, he worked for the Department of Veterans of Affairs, Veterans Benefits Administration, as a Program Analyst. Following his retirement, he was an avid Master Gardener and was a member of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners and Dare County, NC, Master Gardeners. Another of Rich's hobbies was creating stained glass art, including sun catchers, picture frames, and window panels. He was an enthusiastic member of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Guild (SVMFG). In addition to editing the Newsletter, he was also the Guild's photographer, and a key participant in the planning and execution of the annual auction. Rich had a love for reading, especially science fiction, and anything to do with gardening. He also loved to travel, especially to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and on international cruises. Spending time with family members and friends at local wineries was a favorite pastime. He will be missed by his family and friends, and his beloved dog, Shogun.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are in the care of Dellinger Funeral Homes, Mt. Jackson.
