Richard Hubbell Obituary
Rick Hubbell, 75, of Reston, Virginia passed away at his home on July 23, 2025. He was born on March 11, 1950, in Washington, DC to Johnson and Sarah Hubbell. He spent his youth living in numerous states and countries as a result of his father's career as a U.S. Army Officer. He attended the University of Florida and earned a B.A. in 1972 in economics with a minor in French. He later attended the American Graduate School of International Management and earned a degree of Master of International Management in 1974. After college he worked for American Express International Banking Corporation and the American International Group.
In 1976, Rick joined the Central Intelligence Agency, eventually becoming a Senior Operations Officer in the clandestine service. In that role, he built a record of initiating and directing productive intelligence operations, often under hazardous conditions, in many parts of the world. Among other assignments, Rick was posted to Tunisia and, in 1980, Rick was appointed Vice Consul to the United States Embassy in Kabul. Later, he served for several years in Sweden. Rick was posted to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1998 and 1999, for which he received the Balkans Service medal. Rick retired from the CIA in 2001 and received from the Director a Certificate of Distinction "for outstanding performance of duty."
After retiring from the CIA, he worked as a private contractor, serving in Israel and the West Bank on behalf of the Palestinian National Authority and the government of Israel. He also engaged in various economic ventures.
Rick completed many triathlons, and enjoyed scuba diving, free diving, and skydiving. He was well versed in several foreign languages including Afghan Dari, Swedish, German, French, and Chinese. Rick was a gifted and adventurous man who was always available to help people who were struggling or less fortunate. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Rick is survived by his brother, John Duncan Hubbell; his sister, Caroline Walradt Travers; his brother-in- law, Peter J. Travers; a niece, Jessica Walradt; and a nephew, Trent Walradt.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., at Trinity All Saints' Episcopal Church, 16 All Saints Road, Princeton, NJ 08540.
