Robin Hiscock Obituary
Robin McConway Hiscock, a musician, civil engineer, runner, and jack of all trades, died at home on June 12, 2024 due to pancreatic cancer. Born on August 26, 1952 in New Haven, CT, he was raised in Charleston, WV, Clavarak, NY, and Annapolis, MD. He attended Severn School and taught at the Severn Sailing Association. After starting at St John's College and Knox College, he began taking night classes at Johns Hopkins University. There he completed his bachelors and masters degrees in environmental engineering.
He met his first wife Linda Gunter in Baltimore, and they dated long distance while he studied for his MBA at University of Chicago and she studied the Alexander Technique in Champaign-Urbana, IL. There the two of them began international folk dancing, meeting some fellow folk dancers who have now become the "Tri-fam," a chosen family who have traveled the world together. Robin and Linda focused on Hungarian folk dancing, joining the performing group "Tisza" in which Robin also played contra.
In 2013, Linda passed away from cancer. Always active in the quaker meeting at Sandy Spring, teaching first day school, he began dating a fellow quaker, Nora Fisher. The two later married in 2016 and went on to have many adventures together, hiking in Keet Seel Canyon, traversing the Camino de Santiago in Spain, and kayaking around the waterways of the Chesapeake.
Known for his big beaming smile and loud, contagious laugh, he lit up the room whenever he walked in. He showed kindness and generosity to everyone around him and had a burning curiosity to learn as much as possible about the world around him. Robin loved to explore, participate in, and experience life. He once said " I feel the most alive when I'm embarrassed," followed by many hilarious stories of bravely taking to the stage, forgetting lyrics or bungling a melody, but laughing all the way, truly enjoying himself.
Robin was preceded in death by his parents William McConway Hiscock, and Irene Gilbert Gibson, step-father Hal Gibson, and his wife of 28 years Linda Gunter. He leaves his wife, Nora Fisher, and daughter Meghan Hiscock (Dave), his step-daughters Elizabeth Fisher (Evan), and Caitlin Vredenburg (Collin), and granddaughter Calliope. Also his step-mother Barbara Hiscock, sister Susan Hiscock, six step-brothers and a step sister; including David Donovan and Paul Gibson (Carol). He cherished his Tri-Fam, the Morgan-Shahs and Codes.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting. In lieu of flowers his family would prefer donations to the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless; DC Youth Orchestra Program; or Ward 8 Woods.
