Theodore R. Newman Jr. (Age 88)

Theodore R. Newman, Jr, 88, former Chief Judge of the D.C. Court of Appeals and Chief Judge of the D.C. Superior Court, died January 6, 2023, of a heart attack at Washington Hospital Center. A native of Tuskegee, Alabama, Judge Newman was born July 5, 1934, to Theodore R. Newman, Sr., an AME Minister, and Ruth Louise Oliver Newman, a schoolteacher. He graduated from Brown University in 1955 with a B.A. degree in philosophy and entered Harvard Law School. After receiving his J.D. in 1958 he served three years in the U.S. Air Force in Laon, France. He later served in the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, before entering private law practice. Called Ted by his friends and colleagues, Judge Newman was honored for his civil rights advocacy. The National Bar Association awarded him the C. Francis Stratford Award, its highest honor; the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association honored him with the William H. Hastie Award. He was president of the National Center for State Courts, fellow of the American Bar Association Foundation of the American Bar Association, and a former trustee of Brown University. He was active in Republican politics in D.C. for several years but later changed his party affiliation to Democrat. Judge Newman was an emeritus member of the De Priest 15 and a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is survived by his partner, Ms. Eulla Wilson of Clinton, Maryland; very special cousins, Ms. Bettye Robinson of Georgia and Dr. Sharlene D. Newman of Alabama; and a host of extended family and friends. Funeral services will be held on January 27, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Metropolitan AME Church, 1518 M Street, NW, Washington, DC. with visitation beginning at 9 a.m.
