Christine Scull Obituary

Christine "Tina" Scull

June 12, 1944 – June 29, 2024

Wenatchee, WA

Christine "Tina" Scull died on June 29, 2024, with her husband by her side following recent visits by her children. She was born in Seattle, WA, to Robert and Eva Henning on June 12, 1944. After attending Roosevelt High School, she completed her undergraduate work at the University of Washington in three years followed by entry into the University of Washington Medical School. While an undergraduate she was active in student affairs and the Congregational Church, as well as being a "Husky Honey," which was a hosting organization for visiting sports teams. She enjoyed telling younger friends and her children about the term in light of current attitudes!

While in medical school she met Eliot Scull who was an intern at Harbor View Hospital, and she would often laugh and say that the New England Eliot fell half in love with her and half with the Pacific Northwest. She completed her medical school training at the Pensacola Florida Naval Hospital, as she accompanied Eliot during his U.S. Navy service. Tina was an intern at Fresno General Hospital in Fresno, CA. She studied Pediatrics as well as women's health care. Her son, Grant, was born in the middle of that internship in 1969. Women physicians at time were allowed no more than a week to recover from childbirth. She moved to Vancouver, Canada, in 1971, where she was a full time mother for three years during Eliot's Ophthalmology training. In 1975, Tina moved to Wenatchee, WA, where she practiced medicine with Drs. Ludwick and Zook and later, with Drs. Weber and Kolokoff. As she was one of very few women physicians in Wenatchee, her practice was often focused on women's health care. She had many loyal patients and friends who appreciated her empathy and expertise. Tina was active in Planned Parenthood, the Wenatchee City Parks board, as well as women's reproductive rights. In 1985, Tina was one of the founders of the Chelan Douglas Land Trust, and remained active in the leadership of the organization through the next four decades. She was instrumental in convening forums and public meetings on the Growth Management Act, land preservation, and worked actively in partnership with her husband on Land Conservation and CDLT issues.

Tina enjoyed the friendship and companionship of many friends, with many wonderful hours cross country and downhill skiing, plus extensive kayak expeditions as far away as Ketchikan, Fiji, and Costa Rica. Always game for adventure, she was a willing participant in backpack trips, long bicycle trips, sailing voyages, plus medical work in Nepal in 1980, followed by a 25 day trek in a part of Nepal unused to any outsiders.

Tina was a wonderful mother to her two children: Grant and Jennifer, as well as a beloved Gigi to her grandsons, and Grandma to her grandaughters. She was a treasured companion and best friend to her husband, Eliot.

The later years of her life were sadly greatly diminished by the onset of Alzheimer's disease, which robbed her of so much but which she faced with courage and a positive demeanor that endeared her to her caregivers and family.

Tina is survived by her husband, Eliot of Wenatchee, WA; her son, Grant; and daughter, Jennifer of Seattle, WA; and her grandchildren: Eliot and Owen Mackay, and Samantha and Sophia Scull, also of Seattle, WA.

A Memorial Service at First United Methodist Church, 941 Washington St., Wenatchee, WA, is planned for Sept 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. She would appreciate donations in her name to the Tina Scull Opportunity Fund at the Community Foundation of NCW, and/or to the Chelan Douglas Land Trust.
