Gary McCoy Obituary

Gary G McCoy, 78, passed away peacefully at home, with his wife Kathleen and family by his side, as well as close friends Sharon and Joe. Originally from Boiling Springs, PA, Gary attended Kutztown University where he met the love of his life. They were inseparable for over 59 years. Gary demonstrated his athleticism in high school football and baseball, and went on to play football for Kutztown University. After college, a natural at most everything he did, Gary mastered many challenging hobbies including motorcross, skiing, sailing, golfing, hunting, and fishing. During a long career teaching Social Studies for the Reading School District, he also put his talents in woodworking and construction to use by building their home in Mohnton, as well as several other homes as a contractor. He also designed and built custom consoles for video control rooms for several corporations, such as QVC. Gary and Kathleen had numerous adventures together, most notably on their sailboat GATSBY. Together they explored the Chesapeake Bay and repeatedly sailed the Intracoastal Waterway to and from the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. Their friends in the sailing community can recount numerous stories that exemplify Gary's intelligence, sound judgement, and willingness to help others in challenging situations. Not one to easily relax, Gary found one true "happy place" where he could enjoy nature, his loved ones, and dearest friends: their lake house in Canada, Fish n' Whistle. Along with their partners, Cathy and Bob, Gary and Kathleen enjoyed countless laughs and memories over the decades in this special place. Gary was not only a devoted husband but also a wonderful father and amazing grandfather. During his son's high school cross country races, Gary would cover as much ground running to cheering spots along the courses as did his son Brian. Known as Pum Pums by his grandsons, he found endless joy watching them play youth sports and college lacrosse, and cherished time spent with them on GATSBY on the Chesapeake and in the Keys. Of course, he most enjoyed time with them making memories at Fish n' Whistle, teaching them to fish and towing them on water toys. He is survived by his loving wife Kathleen, son Brian, daughter-in-law Elise, grandsons Connor and Finn, his sister Jill (LaCarter), and brother Joe. Though not known for his patience, Gary led by example on how to be a good brother, loyal friend, caring father, doting grandfather, and most of all, a loving and devoted husband. Those who knew and loved him will remember him as much for his occasional grumpiness as for his great sense of humor, wisdom, and work ethic. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. In remembrance, please consider a donation to The American Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Stitzel Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Gary Glenn McCoy, please visit our floral store.

Yesterday

Dear Kathleen & Family, One of the things I miss most about retirement is not seeing special patients like you every six months. Accept my thoughts and prayers during this time of loss. I am glad you have so many wonderful memories; especially, on GATSBY. I´ll never forget meeting each other on the Chesapeake during one of our sails. God´s blessings, Love, Dr. Ruoss
