Michael A. Donio

Michael A. Donio (Rooney), 80, formerly of Wescosville, passed away Friday, April 25, 2025 at Mosser Nursing Home, Trexlertown. Born in York, PA, he was the son of the late Alfred and Patricia (Shindel) Rooney. He was of the Catholic faith and graduated from York Catholic, Class of 1963. Before retiring, he worked as the Director of Projects for the People's Medical Society, formerly of Allentown, and previously at Rodale Press. He enjoyed being a part of the Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA) Chapter 17. Michael was an Army veteran serving as a First Lieutenant during the Vietnam War. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1968, after receiving a bachelor's degree in communications from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, and enrolled in Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Fort Benning, GA. He was the Public Information Officer for the 18th Airborne Corps headquarters at Fort Bragg, NC. In 1970, he deployed to Vietnam, where he worked as the Information Officer of the Saigon support command. Survivors: sister Jane, wife of Robert E. Ruppel of Timonium, MD; nieces Cathy Ruppel of York, PA and Susan Ruppel, wife of David Smith of Warrenton, VA; grandnephews Andrew Smith of Arlington, VA and Alex Smith of Williamsburg, VA; nephew John Ruppel and his wife Ashleigh of York, PA. Memorial Service: 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 7 at Schmoyer Funeral Home, 8926 Brookdale Rd., Breinigsville. Calling hour to begin at 10:00 AM. Burial with military honors at 2:00 PM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Rd., Annville, PA. Memorials can be considered in lieu of flowers to an animal charity of one's choice.
