Ellen Fleming Obituary
With a sense of both peace and sadness, the family of Ellen Catherine Fleming announces her death on August 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. She was 88 years old.
Ellen was born in Meriden, CT, on November 9, 1936. Loving wife of Jimmy Fleming, celebrating 57 years of marriage this year. Her parents, Clifford and Mary Camp, raised Ellen and her older sister Arlene surrounded by love. She described those early years as idyllic and simple, with many fond memories. Ellen graduated from Meriden High School in 1955 and was employed by AGC until retirement.
Jimmy met Ellen while delivering mail to her home, and neither rain, sleet, nor snow could keep Jimmy from seeing Ellen. She was energetic and spirited, with a timeless sense of style. Ellen cherished simple joys like Sunday drives with Jimmy, reading, tending to her flowers, and admiring lighthouses. A strong faith deeply shaped her life. Her defining trait was that of a giver; Ellen was always there for her family, grandchildren, and friends. She had natural caregiving skills and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. You could always count on Ellen to be there.
Her greatest joys were her grandchildren. She was a dedicated and loving grandmother who was always up for a driving adventure, whether it was shopping trips, Flamig Farm summer camp, beach visits, trips to New York City, Yankee Candle, annual visits to the Christmas Polar Express in Essex, Kid City museum, or Costco free sampling days. Ellen loved to have a fresh batch of brownies ready for her grandchildren's visits. She always made holiday gatherings special for them with festive napkins, plates, and treats. Ellen maintained many close friendships over the years, often sharing luncheons filled with laughter and joy. She was always ready for an adventure with Jimmy and Jay, whether skiing on bluebird days or exploring many states across the US, especially her yearly visits to Cape Cod. She even enjoyed the thrill of a joy ride on a motorcycle with Jay at the spry age of 83. In her later years, Jimmy and Ellen loved visiting the Connecticut shoreline, especially Old Saybrook, and watching the boats pass by. She loved being by the water. We will miss her dearly.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Maureen Fleming, and three grandchildren, Kayleigh, Alannah, and Declan Fleming. She also leaves behind her nieces, Pat Pearston, Mary Davidson, and nephews, Ed, Chris, and Steve Wrinn.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Friday, August 29th, at 11:30 a.m., at Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish, Holy Angels Campus, 585 Main St, Meriden, CT 06451. Burial will follow at State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Ln, Middletown, CT 06457.
