Joan Cain Obituary
Ms. Joan (Bennett) Cain, 84, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2025 at her home. She was the beloved and cherished wife of the late John Cain Sr.
Joan was born January 30,1940 in Gatesville, North Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of the late Joe and Rebecca (Freeman) Bennett.
Joan was educated in the Gates County Public Schools before embarking on a career as a welder with Pratt & Whitney, where she worked for over 30 years. A dedicated and hardworking employee, Joan earned numerous awards and accolades during her time there. She retired on December 18, 2005.
In her retirement, Joan fully embraced her role as a matriarch, devoting her life to raising her grandchildren, gardening, redecorating her home, and cooking for her loved ones. Family was the heart of Joan's life. She took great pride in organizing family reunions, celebrations, and Friday night game nights, where her house rules for spades were prominently displayed for all to follow. Sundays after church were filled with delicious meals, she lovingly prepared for anyone who stopped by to enjoy good food and fellowship.
Known for her outspoken and bold personality, Joan was never one to hold back her thoughts, always speaking her mind with honesty and conviction. A passionate fan of UConn Huskies basketball, she loved watching and attending games whenever she could. As an active community member, she served as a board member and secretary for the Margaret Willow Plaza Neighborhood Association from 2011 until 2019.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children: Mark Redding, Keith Redding (Tootsie), Barbara Redding, Maurice Burrus (Adrian), Dawn Vaz, and Renee Cain, all of Waterbury, CT; Barry Redding (Lucinda) of Willimantic, CT; and John Cain Jr. (Alva) of Enfield, CT. Joan also leaves behind 29 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Additionally, she is survived by her godson, Bobby Nealey Jr. "BJ", her lifelong friend, Betty Turner, and her best friend, Mary Lovett (Otia) Hickson. Joan was predeceased by her daughter, Delores Redding; her son, Darryl Michael Cain; her four brothers, Charlie Henry Freeman, William G. Bennett, Joe Bennett, and James L. Bennett; and her sister, LeErma Bennett Holmes.
Joan's legacy of love, family, and togetherness will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
