Mary Powers Obituary

Mary Louise Powers (Villanucci), 91, of Avon, CT, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 17, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, James J. Powers. Born on March 15, 1934, and raised in East Boston, MA, Mary began her career at the New England Telephone Company at the young age of 16. Her strong work ethic and dedication defined her many years there, leading up to well-earned retirement. After marrying James, they settled in Malden, MA, where she devoted her life to her family. Mary was a steadfast supporter and tireless champion of her children and grandchildren, always their number one fan in every endeavor. Mary was a wonderful cook, and her home was a place of warmth and celebration – especially during the holidays when she lovingly hosted joyful and memory-filled Christmas for extended family and friends. A proud Bostonian, Mary was an enthusiastic support of the Boston Celtics and all local sports teams. In retirement, she and James cherished their time together in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where she enjoyed socializing with friends, shopping and attending races at Gulfstream Park. Mary is survived by and will be dearly missed by her loving children, son, James J. Powers Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Avon, CT; daughters, Maryellen Powers and husband, Nathaniel Hammond of Louisville, KY and Jeanne Powers. She was the proud grandmother of Alexander Powers and his wife, Xinyi, Suzanna Powers, Rebecca Powers, Max Powers, Thomas Powers-Hammond and great-grandmother to James Powers. Mary leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins as well. Predeceased by her brothers, Benny and Alfred, and sisters Anna and Lucy. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Pathways Elder Care, especially Natalie, Stephanie, Vera, and Sandra, for their compassionate care and support. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Demetia Society of America, PO Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901 or dementiasociety.org (http://dementiasociety.org)
