Mary Howerton Obituary
Mary Louise Howerton, 87, of Quincy, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
Mary was born March 18, 1938, in Sterling, IL to James and Elnora (Peterson) Bradley. She was married to John D. Howerton on June 28, 1958, in Sterling, IL. He preceded her in death on March 23, 2011.
Survivors include her three children, Paula Meckes (Tim) of Danville, KY, John Howerton (Merritt) of Fishers, IN, and Jim Howerton (Lisa) of Quincy; six grandchildren, Alexandra Heckert (Michael) of Nicholasville, KY, Madeline Meckes of Arlington, VA, Max Meckes (Katie) of Lexington, KY, Savannah Harker (Dylan) of Shelbyville, IN, Valarie Howerton of Chicago, IL, and McKenna Howerton of Fishers, IN; and four great-grandchildren, Mason, Archer, Luca, and Georgia.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her Aunt Helen; and one brother in-law, Greg Howerton.
A graduate of Newman High School in Sterling, Mary's professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. She brought her meticulous skills to various roles, including bookkeeper for the Illinois State Bank in accounting, Quincy Casket, Crescent Electric, Community Counseling Center, and Gully Transportation. Mary's compassionate heart also led her to serve as a caregiver at Carelink, where she touched many lives with her kindness and empathy. Her career, however, never overshadowed her love for her family and her many passions. Mary's younger years were filled with the rhythm of dance, a passion she delighted in passing down to her children and grandchildren. She was also a graceful ice skater in her youth, often journeying to Chicago to witness the magic of the Ice Capades. Her love for the arts extended to musicals, with many cherished outings to the Quincy Community Theatre.
An exceptional baker, Mary's apple pies and cookies were the highlight of family gatherings. Her musical tastes were eclectic, and she could often be found singing along to the timeless melodies of Nat King Cole, Barbara Streisand, and Whitney Houston. An avid reader, bridge player, and puzzle enthusiast, Mary's intellectual curiosity was boundless. She also had a love for travel, with memorable trips to Ireland and Hawaii, as well as enjoying the simple pleasures of day trips.
Above all, Mary valued her time with family. She was a familiar face at her grandchildren's sporting events and dance recitals, always offering her unwavering support and encouragement. Her visits to family members, regardless of the distance, were a testament to her loving nature. Mary's life was a beautiful mosaic of love, service, and joy. Her friendliness touched the lives of many, and her dedication to her family will be remembered for generations to come.
Friends and Family are invited to a visitation that will be Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Quincy, IL. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am with Fr. Ken Ahanonu officiating. Burial will follow at Stewart Cemetery in Plainville, IL.
