Sudhir Mehta Obituary

Sudhir Mehta Obituary WOBURN - A loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Sudhir Kumar Mehta, 75, of Woburn, MA, passed away in Stoughton, MA, surrounded by his family on June 18, 2024. Sudhir Mehta was born in Haridwar, Uttar Pradesh, in 1948 to Shakuntala and Jugal Kishore Mehta. He grew up with his eldest brother, Vijay, his sister, Indu, and his youngest brother, Ajay. He was trained in the family business as an optician from a young age. With an independent spirit, unapologetically himself, and always a go-getter, Sudhir Mehta moved to Srinagar, Kashmir, at the age of 17. He set up the first optical store in the Kashmir valley in 1966 and opened additional shops, including an army-based location. Sudhir worked alongside the army at various vision camps as an optician serving remote villages within the Kashmir valley. He became well-known as "Bawa" in Lal Chowk and throughout Srinagar. Though well established in Kashmir, due to unrest, Sudhir moved his family to Boston in the 90s as a last resort for their safety. When recently asked about his best memories, he answered without hesitation that they were from his time in Kashmir. Kashmir was where his heart belonged. After moving to Boston, he worked as an optician at Eye World and Lens Crafters. Sudhir Mehta could never sit still. Even during his retirement, he worked tirelessly at Evergreen Adult Daycare, driving the elderly to and from their homes. After work he loved spending time with his grandchildren by making them food and sharing "fun" snacks together. He will especially be remembered for his fondness for cooking. He brought a unique twist to classic dishes like dal tadka, ziti broccoli, keema mattar, chicken curry, goat meat, egg bhurji, and so much more. His food always left a lasting impression on everyone who sat at his table. Sudhir Kumar Mehta is survived by his wife, Neera Mehta; his three children and their spouses, Kavita and Ketan, Anuradha and Sunil, Rohit and Hidemi; and four grandchildren, Esha, Viyaan, Vanika, and Emika. He will always be remembered for his tenacity and living life to the fullest (on his own terms). We'll always remember hearing him say "bhool ja, jane de, takdeer se takrar na kar" translated to "forget it, let it go, do not fight your destiny." I will always remember sitting down to lunch with Sudhir and Vijay. Of course my dog was excited to see there was food on the table. Sudhir talked and without missing a heartbeat, he kept dropping little bits of food to my delighted dog. I remember thinking that´s very kind to do. Obviously he loved dogs.
