Richard Scranton Obituary

May 13, 1935 -- Dec. 13, 2008 LIBERTY, Ill. -- Richard L. "Dick" Scranton, 73, of Liberty, died at 8:05 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 13, 2008) in Blessing Hospital. Born May 13, 1935, in Quincy, Dick was a son of Amos J. and Sophia R. Weisinger Scranton. He married Carole Shelton on June 10, 1960, in Payson. She died May 31, 2006. Dick was a member of Payson Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a 1953 graduate of Payson-Seymour High School. He played independent basketball and coached and played fast pitch softball for many years and was an avid Cubs fan. He was a member of the Adams County Farm Bureau and a longtime member of the National Rifle Association. Dick was also a longtime member and leader of the Payson Rolling Ridge 4-H Club. He loved to quail hunt and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and attending their school activities. He had also served his country as a sergeant in the National Guard at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Dick was a life long farmer on the family farm in Burton Township. He is survived by a daughter, Susan Kill and her husband, Alan, of St. Peters, Mo.; two sons, Rick Scranton and his wife, Rose Ann, of Westport, Ind., and Tim Scranton and his wife, Elaine, of Liberty; 12 grandchildren, Cheyenne Rose Scranton and Samantha Sue Scranton, both of Westport, Ind., Brittany Klescht of Grammar, Ind., Dustin Bergstrom of Olney, Joshua Ray Scranton and his wife, Sacha, Brandon Parker Scranton and Jacob Lee Scranton, all of Quincy, Michael Wayne Huston and Amber Lynn Huston, both of Liberty, Lindsay Desiree Kill, Lucas Alan Kill and Sydney Paige Kill, all of St. Peters; one great-grandson, Klayton Thomas Scranton of Quincy; two uncles, Marion "Bud" Scranton and his wife, Mary, of Quincy and Nick Weisinger of Payson; and one goddaughter, Hanna Heinecke Blazel and her husband, Ted, of Madison, Wis. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carole; one sister, Joanne Tullock; and one brother, Gary Scranton. SERVICES: 10 a.m. Thursday in Payson Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Rick Welch conducting. Burial will be in Burton Cemetery. VISITATION: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy and 9 a.m. until time of services Thursday in the church. MEMORIALS: Dick and Carole Scranton Scholarship Fund at Blessing-Reiman School of Nursing. ARRANGEMENTS: Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home, Quincy.
