Lynn Farber Obituary

Lynn Howison Farber, Chi Chi, age 68, of Orleans, MA passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 25, 2015 after a six year battle with cancer. Lynn was the wife and best friend of Dawson L. Farber III for 45 years. She was born in Portland, Maine and grew up in Falmouth Foreside, Maine. She was predeceased by her father, Ludwell Lee Howison, and mother, Dolores Spencer Howison. Lynn and Dawson met at Clark University in Worcester, MA and moved to Cape Cod after their marriage in 1970. During their early years, they undertook a labor of love and restored a marshside antique Cape in Eastham, where they raised their two boys, Dawson L. Farber IV and Corley L. Farber. A devoted mother, Lynn tended to their boys, volunteered in their schools, and kept their home a hub for many friends and relatives. After their children were grown, Lynn and Dawson fulfilled a lifelong dream and bought a waterfront home overlooking Pleasant Bay in Orleans. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she managed to turn an old hunting camp into a beautiful home fit for their growing family to enjoy holidays, parties on the deck, and boat rides from the dock. Lynn is survived by her husband, Dawson, their son Dawson IV, his wife Cirrus, and their three children, Madelyn, Lachlan, and Grayson as well as their son Corley, his wife Kelly, and their three children, Oliver, Benjamin, and Elizabeth. Lynn is also survived by her sister Gail Karkos, her brother Lee Ludwell Howison, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. Known as Chi Chi to her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, Lynn was special to all who knew her. She possessed a keen sense of humor and never minced words, but always respected the thoughts and words of others. A welcoming hostess, she loved to fill her home with the laughter of family and friends, all while enjoying the beauty of the bay. Living her life by the tides, she enjoyed beach walks, shellfishing, and boating as well as gardening, cooking, and world traveling. Never was her smile bigger than when she was watching her grandchildren perform in plays, concerts, and various sports. She regrets that she wouldn't get the chance to dance at Madelyn's wedding. If one could take away any lesson from her life, it would be to live each day as if it were your last- that there is no dress rehearsal. Chi Chi will be dearly missed, but forever remembered. Per her request, burial will be private. She was in awe of all the medical staff that assisted her, especially Dr. Kevin Oh at Massachusetts General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be given in her name to his continued research so that others might have life. Donations can be made by check to Massachusetts General Hospital c/o Development Office, Attn: Katie Fischer, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114 or online at www.massgeneral.org/give. The Farber family will match all donations and continue to support the fund in her name. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com.

Not sure what to say?

Dawson and Corley:

I liked your mom the first time I ever met her, which would have been in the late 1960's, probably at Clark. She and your dad seemed destined for one another. I got to know her better over the course of many years, as we shared experiences at my parents' home in Brewster, which became the "get away" house while we were in college. She was a wonderful hostess and friend for all of my Princeton buddies who journeyed to this far off place, Cape Cod. Lynn and her New England friends had much to say about their girlfriends. It was two worlds colliding. But, everyone loved Lynn; there was no doubt about that.

Your mother and I had shared several experiences. Two stand out in my mind: a trip to Falmouth Foreside to see her parents, and a sail from Rock Harbor to Provincetown. I loved working at your parents' first home on Dyer Prince Road. Watching your dad put up white cedar shingles on the sidewalls with roofing nails - lots of roofing nails - was one of the funniest things I ever saw.

We had great fun watching the Bruins games on channel 38, which required a special antenna of some sort, and playing Risk. Your dad drove a Porsche at 70 mph or more on Route 6A to work each morning, when he was a mechanic. Can you believe your father was ever a mechanic?

I always loved to come to your mother's home out on the point in Orleans. She was such a generous person, and such a great homemaker.

I could go on and on. I am so sorry that your mother's battle with cancer was so long and difficult. Through it all, I know you guys, and your dad, did everything possible for her. I have no doubt that, despite her illness, the last years of her life were full of immense joy and pride in her children and grandchildren.

Chi Chi was a very special person. Right up there at the top in my book.

Love, Uncle Peter

Dawson IV and Family,

I first met and chatted with your mother several years ago at a F.O.P.B. event, and can still recall her smile and cheerful personality. Through Judith B., I heard more about what a remarkable woman your mother was. For sure, memories of her will always be comforting, encouraging and enjoyable, for you and family.

She was always friendly and kind and use to tell me about her grandchildren and how happy she was to be with them.
Please know that my husband and I are thinking of all of you and hope the happy memories you had with her will help to sustain you through these sad days.
