Carol Birdsall Obituary

Carol Lawrence Birdsall, died unexpectedly on November 17, 2020. Carol was born in New York City on August 14, 1951. She grew up in New London, Ct., where she attended the Williams School. She went on to earn a B.A. in English Literature from Harvard University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Carol taught 4th and 5th grades at the Louisa May Alcott School in Concord, Ma. During that time, she earned the coveted National Teacher Certification and traveled to China on a research grant. Her crowning achievement in education was the staging of full-blown productions of Shakespeares plays, adapted for elementary school students. Over the course of her teaching career, she used each production as a vehicle for cross-disciplinary learning, real world education, and self-actualization. In reading letters from former students, one can see that these theater experiences were pivotal in these students later successes in a variety of fields. Carol was an accomplished, classically trained violinist. She attended the Yale Music School in New Haven, Ct. She performed with the Boston Philharmonia, numerous string quartets and trios, as well as the pit orchestra for musical productions of the Concord Community Theater. She also loved to sing with the Concord Chorus. Carol was a shining lig ht for her family, her close friends, and her community. Her fierce intelligence, her passion for teaching, and her deep appreciation of the arts inspired all around her. She found her own inspiration in the natural world, hiking the Long Trail, cycling in rural Vermont, and producing elaborate flower and vegetable gardens each year. She adored animals and cherished her relationships with her cats, Spenser and Julius, and especially, with her dog, Cordelia. Carol is survived by her mother, Virginia O. Birdsall, of Waterford, Ct., her brother, Hugh Birdsall, of Clinton, Ct., her sister, Meredith Birdsall-Cunningham, of Concord, her nephew, Nathaniel Cunningham, and her nieces, Rachel and Emily Cunningham. Due to the current pandemic, funeral arrangements will be private. A memorial service to be held at First Parish in Concord, Ma. when Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted.

Very sorry to see this news. I have so many fond memories of Carol over many years as a family friend and as a teacher. I vividly remember being in "Hamlet" when I was in fifth grade, which she made a wonderful experience for all of us in the play. She was a wonderful teacher and friend to so many, and I am so sorry that she is no longer with us.

Carol was a tremendously positive force in both of our kids' lives. Our girls relished the chance to do Shakespeare and still can recite their lines today, so many years later. Carol was a unique treasure in our school community. Her interdisciplinary approach was effective, yes, and the kids learned what was required of them. But, they learned so much more than that, too. They learned about teamwork, creativity, perseverance, and empathy. Above all, Carol made learning fun. The kids adored her and could tell that she loved teaching as well as learning and loved all her students for the unique individuals that they are. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of Carol's loved ones. Please know that she will always be with us and that her impact has been significant and lasting.

We shared our youthful dreams, our secrets, our fears, some tears, silly jokes, and much giggling. We joyfully supported and challenged each other in an intense quest for knowledge and in our love of music. Our spirits and sparkle will meet again. May you rest in peace, dear Carol. With love, Doreen Chen Allen

I will always remember her violin and listening to her play with Hugh and Dogbite. So glad there are recordings. She leaves behind a big and beautiful mark on the world.

So sad to hear this. Ms. Birdsall was my 5th grade teacher and I still fondly recall her word of the day duck that she had stung up across the classroom, ready to fly to any student who used the word of the day correctly.

My thoughts are with her family, friends and her many former students who were so positively impacted by her life.

Ms. Birdsall was a wonderful teacher and person. My family is very grateful for her teaching Libby for the 3rd and 4 th grade. The Shakespearean plays Libby participated in, the community garden her class grew and all of the love and compassion she showed to her students. Ms. Birdsall equally valued respect for oneself and the group and showed her 4th graders to do so, as well. She taught parents to step back when needed and to step up when asked! Funny and fierce, joyful and generous, Ms. Birdsall and her room, her plays, and her spaghetti picnics will be treasured childhood memories. Our deep sympathies to her family and friends.

I'm so sad to hear about this communal loss of my (and probably many people's) favorite teacher. Like many of her former students, my class took part in a Shakespeare play - Macbeth. When I heard about her passing, I immediately went to check that I still had something from her on my dresser (an eraser that says "out, damned spot") and of course I did, something like 18 years later. I was Lady Macbeth in the play which felt like my crowning achievement in elementary school. I was so proud and excited, but the second night of our performances, in the middle of my Lady Macbeth hallucinations, I forgot my lines. The line is something like "hark a drum!" and I completely blanked. I felt like there was no way out, and then Ms. Birdsall was stage right and hit an actual drum, and I remembered. That she made that type of creative space for her students means so much to me - now maybe even more than as I kid, when I didn't realize probably the administrative obstacles for doing something like that. I vaguely also remember her having us over as a class (maybe a visit to her garden?) I didn't know so many of her accomplishments listed in this obituary, but they all make perfect sense. That she was an extraordinarily talented person doesn't surprise me at all. But to be so generous with those talents, and time, is something completely else. I so regret not being able to see her again, and will remember her with much love.

Ms. Birdsall was incredible teacher in so many ways. She instilled a sense of confidence in her students. We still have the book bag she made. She gave so much of herself to her students. Her silly antics endeared herself to her students. (She walked backwards and fell off the stage and then popped up laughing.) She was bold, direct, and tough-minded, but she also lifted up the students and we will always be inspired her.
