Douglas Sears Obituary

Douglas Hubbard Sears, 98, beloved husband of the late Anne Thomas Sears for 74 years, died peacefully in his Concord home on Friday, November 10, 2017, with his children at his side. Born in Newton, Mass on October 19, 1919, he was the son of the late Chester Hunt Sears and Edith (Hubbard) Sears. He graduated from the Fessenden School in 1933 where his father headed the history department. After graduating from Newton High School in 1936, he was an economics major at Harvard College, graduating in 1940, and from Harvard Business School in 1942. After service in the Navy he settled in Saco, Maine where he raised his family until he moved them to Concord in 1959. He held comptrollership positions with W.H. Nichols Company, Saco Lowell Shops, West Point-Pepperell, Draper Corporation, Amtel Corporation, and Parker-Hannifin Corporation. Doug was always able to keep his family in Concord despite job changes that necessitated commutes back to Maine, to South Carolina, and to Rhode Island. In his sixties, he and Anne became certified in scuba diving, and completed over five hundred deep-sea dives in oceans, seas, and reefs around the world. While diving, they frequently collected specimens for the Boston Aquarium. Amateur underwater photographers, Doug and Anne traveled extensively including many areas now unsafe for tourists. They relished preserving flora native to their property. They researched and photographed the wildflowers of Concord. Doug dutifully toted the screen and projector to Annes lectures at local ladies clubs, the First Parish and Newbury Court. They lived a full life bound together in major part by their love of travel and exploring nature. Doug was a proud husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to the people he loved most. He leaves behind three children: Rev. Douglas Warren Sears and his wife Suzanne of Tewksbury; Deborah (Sears) Wyndham of Radford, Virginia; Pamela Sears-Rogan, M.D. and her husband Kevin Rogan, M.D. of Potomac MD; and five grandchildren: Rebecca Anne Sears, Douglas Warren Sears, Jr. and his wife Laury (Som) Sears; Michael Kevin Rogan, Katherine Anne Roberts, M.D. and her husband Austin, and Timothy Christopher Rogan. A Memorial Service for Doug and Anne will be held at the First Parish in Concord in the spring at a date to be announced. Private burial will take place at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dougs memory may be made to the Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Rd., Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
