William Sutherland Obituary
William J. Sutherland, Jr., "Bill", age 90, of Danvers, died Aug. 17, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Bill was born in Gloucester on Sept. 18, 1919. He was the son of the late William J. and Mary (Allain) Sutherland. Bill grew up in Gloucester and graduated from Gloucester High School. He was a Captain in the Gloucester High School ROTC and a member of the 1937 Drill Team that won the William Randolph Hearst trophy for sharpshooting. He attended the Franklin Technical School in Boston and earned his journeyman electrician license. He worked as an electrician for Davis Brothers fishery in Gloucester and in 1984 retired from Sylvania, Boston Street plant in Salem where he had worked for 30 years. He was an amateur radio operator, call sign W1RAL. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post in Danvers and a past member of the Improved Order of Red Men Wingaersheek Tribe, No. 12. Mr. Sutherland was a staff Sergeant in the 125th Army Airways Communication System Squadron in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the China/Burma/India theatre. Bill along with his wife Angie square danced for over 40 years and was active in the square dance community. He was a member and a past president of the Fairtown Squares of Topsfield. Past president and secretary of the North Shore Square and Round Dance Association and past secretary and clerk of the Square Dance Foundation of New England. He was vice-chairman of the 1989 - 1990 New England Square and Round Dance conventions, which were held in Danvers. Also was co-owner of My Square Lady, a square dance apparel shop. "Good people will be remembered as a blessing..." Proverbs 10:7. He is survived by his beloved wife Angeline L. (Francis) Sutherland, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage in July. Daughters Louise A. Sutherland, Eileen A. (Sutherland) Roberts and Edwin Ted Roberts, Jr. Grandchildren Lyndsey L. (Roberts) MacDougall and Aaron B. MacDougall, William R. Roberts and Anastasia (Kouteiva) Roberts. Great Grandsons Harrison, Benjamin and Liam MacDougall, Louis and Sergei Roberts. And much-loved dog Phoebe. Brother-in-Law of Mabel Bradley, Audrey Francis, Leo Francis, Arlene and Merlin Hunt and Clo Witham. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors. He was predeceased by his brothers Eugene G., Roy W., Allen J. and John L. Sutherland. Visiting hours were held on Thursday, Aug. 19, from 6-8 p.m. Following cremation, his funeral service was held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. Family and friends were cordially invited to attend. The burial was held in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice of the North Shore Danvers, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, and the American Red Cross.
